webinator1961's Full Review: Age of Mythology: The Titans for Windows
---I was surprised to see only 1 review on this game. Hope I'm not the only one that has enjoyed countless hours with this series.---
Let me say, I've followed this series from it's very humble beginnings. Yes, back when you could hunt a bird flying over you. The Titans is where it's at my AOE, AOM peers! You do need Age of Mythology since this is an expansion pack. To try and review this game is like trying to explain the world. There's lots of depth to this game.
Game Type: Strategy. You are in a world setting. You control one empire. You choose which empire you want to rule before you start. You are in Titans for one reason really, rule the world. You do this by conquering your foes. Do you want to go 1 empire v 1 empire or team up and go 2 empires v 2 empires or 3v3 etc. The game allows for many teams on one playing field, which is likely for online gamers. If you want you can just have a number of empires out there without teaming up. You have the option to team up during the game. You can play online as well. Get your butt kicked by an 8 yr old from Taiwan.
When you get ready to start a game, you choose the empire you'd like to be in. In Titans specifically, you have choices of Greek, Egyptian, Norse and Atlantean. You can also pick a specific God. The Norse for example have Odin, Loki, Hades, and Thor. Each main God has minor Gods to choose during the progression of the game.
You also choose how big the population will be. Generally I choose to have 100 units. Empires in regular game mode will have the same population limits. In editor, you may be able to tweak some interesting options there.
As your empire progresses and builds up resources you can buy your way into the next generation. You need resources for buildings, soldiers, villagers, everything. You begin in the Archaic Age. Next are Classical Age, Heroic Age then the Mythic Age. Each generation allows you to choose an additional god which comes with specific upgrades, units and additional powers.
Your chosen God powers are in a small window on the top of your screen. You can invoke them at any time. Some of these God powers are for single use, others you can use up to 3 times. The God Powers get better as you progress. You have the option in each generation to choose from 2 gods. So, by the time you get to the Mythic Age, you will have viewed 6 additional gods to choose from. Each god coming with their own perks.
Some examples of God Powers the Atlanteans
have at their disposal:
(You target the location you want to effect with your god powers)
Shockwave is available in the Archaic Age. You strike an army or any enemy to blow them back temporarily. It doesn't last long. Gives you a moment to think maybe.
In the Classical Age, a spider's lair or a man-eating plant. These powers last a little longer. The spiders lair takes a moment to hatch and places a trio of webs on the ground with man size spiders waiting beneath for an enemy to cross. It doesn't eat your people. The man-eating plant also is stationary and waits for unwitting foes to drop by for a meal. The plant can be defeated by heroes or a number of troops. The spider's lair typically takes a unit out and he's done. Each spider is good for one attack. The plant can eat over and over until the foes defeat it. Great for planting in a villagers path.
The Heroic age has a Chaos power you can cast on a foe's army. This turns your enemy upon himself. Once the unit/s goes chaotic, everyone is their enemy.
Your targeted enemy however many there are in your field of view are effected by approximately 35%.
The Mythic Age brings some fun powers too. The Tartarian gate is one. It opens a hole in the ground unleashing demons. If a demon is killed, another one pops out of the hole to replace him. This will continue until their hole is destroyed. These demons are not on anyone's side except their own. Typically target this demon gate near your enemy, well out of your territory. If you go to attack a village avoid the demons you sent over there. They look like a panther on steroids.
THE TITAN When you reach the mythic age your town center has the option to research a Titan. (You buy your way into upgrades throughout the game.)Once the Titan is researched you can buy a site to build a Titan gate, anywhere you want.
If your foes destroy your Titan gate before you complete it, you lose your Titan. You don't have the option to build another gate either. It takes your villagers a long time to build this gate too, so make sure you have plenty of villagers on hand to do the building before you set the site.
What's a Titan?Titans are specific to each empire. They may look different, but they all work the same way. They all have 7000 hit points. None of them can cross water boundaries. They're all huge. Their knees bump the top of your buildings. They don't have weapons. They just walk over to your village and start pounding their fists or their feet to destroy everything in it's path. Yes, you're in deep caca if your foe gets a Titan before you do.
What about Mythic Units?
Sticking with the Atlantean empire, I'll name a few. There are 13 mythic units for this empire(Other empires have their own specific units and just as many, just different).
Automaton-a fighting cyborg looking robot that when teamed up with other automatons can repair each other. They cannot repair themselves.
Promethean-clay creature if defeated will then turn into 2 smaller prometheans. The smaller ones are not that strong, but they can outrun just about anything out there. Foes will typically fight you to the death, so you can lead foes off to a far corner of the world away from your village.
Dryad-you set a Hesperides Tree and you can summon Dryads from it. The Dryad is a tree-creature and will fight fight fight. The Hesperides Tree though can backfire if you lose control of it, allowing your enemy to surround it. The Tree then will become theirs. I typically don't go for this power because it works against me if I lose ground.
Villagers-Generated from your Town Center. Each empire's villagers work differently.
One striking contrast is with the Norse where soldiers do all the building. So, if you last Norse villager dies you can always have a soldier build a town center. If you don't have the resources, then your out of luck.
The villager generally in any empire do the hunting, gathering, mining, and building.
Soldiers-There are all sorts of soldiers you can assemble as long as you don't go over your chosen population limit. Most empires will have swordsmen, spearmen, and calvary. Mythic units compliment your regular military. All military units have an attack stance. You can have them stand their ground, be defensive, or offensive. You can set up a point A to B type patrol area for as little or many units you want to. If your patrol is set to offensive stance while on patrol, they will follow and attack until they are dead or vice versa. The whole patrol may not see the foe, so it could be just a few that chase down the foe. If in defensive mode, they will attack foes that enter their range of site, but will return to the patrol if the foe leaves.
ControlYou can select individual or groups of units to do your bidding. For example, highlight a group of villagers to build a building. Pick a scout to ride over to a dark corner of the world in search of resources or enemy locations. Highlight a whole army to march into your foes village.
Mini-mapalways there for reference. It highlights you and your enemies and their structures by color. It also shows movement, say if they are headed your way. You can choose options for the map to show resources only, or military units only.
Unit StatusThis is a window always viewable. When you highlight a unit it will show you how many hitpoints are left. From this screen you can have your unit do things for you. Command a villager to build a building. Command a soldier to patrol an area. YOu can also upgrade your unit here. Make a soldier a hero(giving him more hitpoints and more dangerous to foe).
Music/SFX: Background music is nicely produced. It's orchestrated and varies. Soft music while your working in your village or powerful music when you attack someone. The music follows the intensity of the game. You control volume levels. Sound FX are excellent and have their own level settings.
Have I covered everything, no. I gave you only a peek into the Atlantean empire. There's other empires with entirely different gods, powers, creatures and units.
Hopefully I've provided a fair glimpse into the world of Titans.
