| chrisbehrens's Full Review: Sharper Image Ionic Breeze GP SI730 Air Purifier |
Just purchased my Ionic Breeze GP from their reconditioned online store which means I got the identical unit for half the price and STILL has the full 5-year warrantee. The unit looked brand new and although I'm a heavy smoker, it seemed to clear the air well. Naturally, I had to test the theory and put my cigarette right behind it and whiffed the air out the front. There was still a SLIGHT smell of smoke, but 100% of the smoke itself was GONE! I loaned it to my daughter who lives in a house with old carpet and pets (1 cat, 1 dog). She sleeps with it on in her room and her allergies are getting better. Your first cleaning will be eye-opening, too. You'll be amazed at just what is floating through the air in your house. Yes, it makes some noise when the ionizing wires get dirty, but keeping a can of compressed air nearby cleans them right up. Being diligent about maintaining the unit will keep it from buzzing and will keep you healthier. I *assume* you'd take care of a $500 machine to begin with, right?
The machine needs no set-up out of the box, cmes with a video (which seems to be more commercial than instructions), a poorly written instruction guide but since there's no moving parts there isn't much to be said to begin with. All warnings about ozone, cleaning, and troubleshooting are plainly spelled out, and there's a toll free number if you have any questions. Included was a Scotch-brand lint free cloth for cleaning the collection grid as well. The only drawback to ordering from their refurbished area is that it does not include the bathroom mini-version free. But if you really want one, order one of THEM from the refurbished area too (also half the retail price).
I'm curious to see how well the IB collects pollen this Spring and will report back when I have a definitive answer. Hopefully Flu season has passed, but if one of my kids gets sick, keeping the IB in their room promises to help get her better faster since the IB will be killing the germs she exhales instead of letting her re-breathe them.
One item of dismay is the germ-killing UV light. I have no idea how long the bulb lasts but their web site does not offer replacement bulbs. I'm investigating whether a burned out bulb is covered under the warrantee.
The other item I'm not pleased about is portability. There is no carrying handle unless you want to risk breaking the collection grid by using its removal handle. Be careful when moving it from room to room!
