Ozone does not mask odors, it reacts with them (Reply to this comment)
by cprohman
If anyone wonders what ozone smells like, smell an electric motor, or think of a spring lightning storm - electrical discharge creates ozone. While Ozone has a distinctive odor, it does not mask odors, it attacks and oxidizes the odor particles. It also attacks and kills germs. Ozone is used by fire restoration professionals to remove smoke odor. It is used by hospital laundries to kill germs. It is effective for both purposes, but it should not be breathed because it will also attack the cell tissue in your lungs. Avoid any device that emits ozone in your home in substantial quantities, or at least do not run it when anyone is at home.

True that tie IB will make noise when it's time to clean it, but should it make noise within 1- seconds of being plugged in for the first time? And even in the few months I was employed by the company we had to change out at least a dozen of the floor models for the same reason, and those were cleaned nightly. So yes, being dirty can cause that but that is evidently not the only cause. I find it very doubtful that our store got the only bad units produced or that the air quality here is bad enough to cause this problem. One good thing about TSI, is their return policy, they are the Wal-Mart of high priced gadgets. So the only way to know is to go try one yourself, hopefully this problem has been addressed but if not it can always be returned.

Sour Grapes from working with The Sharper Image????? (Reply to this comment)
by dodgerfan69
Sounds as though you had sour grapes working for the company and this seems to be a way of getting even.
Try using a more educated approach and if you have indeed worked for the company, then you know how well the company backs the product.
The Consumers Union report tested fan based air cleaners vs non-fan cleaners and that is like comparing apples to oranges. Of course a fan moves more air; however, more air and faster does not mean that it to a better way to clean. As with almost everything in life, slow but sure is the best way to get things done with more effectiveness. Rather than fast and non-effectiveness. Keep one thing in mind, this is a proven way to clean air, check the AAAP website and keep in mind the costs related to other ways to clean air and third look at the company who backs the product and the service behind the product.
If you are going to bash TSI for having what you say is a poor product, then you are entitled to your opinion; however, to everyone else reading this-go into a Sharper Image store and speak to a manager as I have. See how knowledgeable they are and then make your decision.
I have three machines and my son has asthma and there is a noticeable difference in his ability to sleep and live. Just another persons opinion.

Gimme a break (Reply to this comment)

First off, if you had bothered to read the manual, that crackling sound is the dirt collected on the grid. The dirtier your airspace, the sooner the grid needs cleaning. I did the ultimate test. I'm highly allergic to cats. I took my I.B. to a friend's house and I slept there. Usually I'm stuffed-up within minutes. I actually slept through the night. So this thing does work...and very well. I tried the Oreck version and it was a joke. I bought my I.B. 3 years ago and upgraded to the GP model 18 months ago...I love it as do my friends that I suggested buy the thing. This GP rids my air of allergens and dust. I notice that the level of dust is much less in the room I use it in. Yes, my crackles at times, that's just a warning to clean the grids.

I had no idea these were so awful. I've wondered in the past if these were worth the money and now I know. Thanks for the review.
