Robinis's Full Review: American Idol for PlayStation 2
I bought this game expecting to get to sing, after all isn't that what the show is about? Well, I was wrong.
I sat down and popped in the disc, ready to sing my heart out. I created a character, choosing a girl and doing her hair and makeup. Even her body shape was able to be altered slightly. That was when I noticed that I had to choose a voice for her.
I chose a voice, a little confused and went on.
When I started playing I found that instead of actually singing, you push buttons to make the contestant sing. Holding some buttons as the contestants held the notes, sometimes combining notes together by pushing two buttons at once.
That was disappointing, but I thought that surely the comments from the judges would make it worthwhile.
I found that it was very easy to make my contestant win and a few hours later I was the American Idol. The comments used by the judges seemed to randomly cycle, but there weren’t enough original ones. Even his insults lacked the pizzazz that they have on the show.
I was about to give up.
But wait. . . The package says that there are karaoke and dance modes are available. Surely the Karaoke is where the real singing happens. I got my voice warmed up and prepared to dazzle. I pushed the button and it offered that I could have one to three judges. Weird, do I get to select from Paula, Randy and Simon? I chose three, to get the full experience, and went on.
OH MAN!
The Karaoke option was like Karaoke at a bar. The highlighted words scrolled on the screen while the music played, but I didn’t have a use for my cool PS2 Karaoke set. When the music stopped the judges were entered by the remote control, it wasn’t even the AI judges!
Okay, one last chance.
The dance mat was hooked up and I was sure that I would get to do some fancy stepping. Or maybe they would have me dancing along with the weirdoes that try to dance instead of sing their way onto American Idol. The dance mat only worked as a form of remote control though. You pushed the buttons on the pad to maker them sing in the same way that you push the buttons to make them sing before.
