| k_lumsden13's Full Review: Apex Digital AD-1110W DVD Player |
Yes, it's small, cheap and often overlooked, but this little player certainly has spunk.
We purchased this dvd player for our son after reading the glowing reviews. You'd never expect to find such a well made dvd player for under $50 bucks. I must say, I'm very pleased with the purchase.
Once it was set up (which took my husband all of 10 minutes), we turned it on and I couldn't believe the picture quality. Our son's tv is an Apex also with Mono speakers, but somehow this dvd player makes it seem like it's more than mono sound. It's not tinny or cheap sounding, nor is the picture distorted in any way.
I read some reviews in which people thought it "looked cheap". Well, that's basically a personal opinion. I don't think it looks cheap. Yeah, it's small, which I think sets it apart looks-wise from all the other humongous, pricey jobs. It's also very convenient for anyone who has just a tv cart set up (like my son). Basically, I think it's cute.
It comes with a lot of the features you'll find on the pricier jobs, too. It can read CD-R's, CD-RW's, Mp3's and JPEG video images. Now the only one we've attempted besides normal dvd's are CD-R's. And it worked fantastically. It took it maybe 15 seconds to read it and start playing. It has closed captioning, which we don't use but have discovered something interesting in that regard. Someone wrote that the CC doesn't always work right. Well, we usually never have a problem except when my son turns on his Thomas the Tank Engine dvd. For some reason, the CC automatically turns on as soon as the dvd starts playing. Whether it's the player or the dvd itself remains to be seen, but since none of the other dvd's do it...well, you decide.
The build is sturdy and non-worrisome. It's very light, but with as little as it is, you'd expect that. The dvd tray that slides out doesn't even worry me. It's stable and secure. It comes out smoothly with no jerking or pausing whatsoever. I believe I read that the open button can get "confused" sometimes. Well, the only time I've ever had a problem with it is when I pushed the open button right after turning the player on. You need to give it a minute to "boot-up" before it will recognize that you're trying to open it. And I don't mean a full minute. More like 10 seconds or so.
The remote is comfortable and easy to use. No funny pointing positions you have to assume to get the player to do what you want.
My son's used this dvd player A LOT in the last few months and we haven't had any problems with it yet. Hey, if a 4 year old can use it, unsupervised and not destroy it in a day, it's a good product in my book. Couple it's durability with quality and features and you've got a nice little time and money saver.
