| jabel45's Full Review: Apple PowerBook G4 15.2 in. (M8980LL/A) Mac Notebo... |
I need computers that are able to multi-task well. I often have several applications running at once and I also do photo editing. While Macintosh computer traditionally carry a heavy price tag, they are well worth the money and this Powerbook is no exception.
I used my Powerbook 15" 1GHz for about 3 years. It never felt slow and I never had any hardware related problems with it. I purchased mine refurbished direct from Apple and the only defect was a single bad pixel on the lcd, which never bothered me.
The battery life is excellent. I've seen several instances of the power adapter breaking but this was never a problem with mine.
My Powerbook also came with an Airport Extreme card and while the wireless worked fine, I noticed that the Airport's reception was nowhere near as good many embedded and PCMCIA wireless cards I've used on PC laptops. Unless you're trying to steal wireless from your neighbors though, this shouldn't be an issue for most users.
I've disassembled this laptop to install extra ram and a larger hard drive. Replacing ram is as simple as removing two screws and opening a door on the bottom. Even a full tear down of the laptop is straight forward provided you have a torx tool and a little courage. In tearing down this laptop I really gained an appreciation for how well designed and constructed it is.
This laptop could handle anything I could throw at it, from video encoding and photo editing on dual monitors to traveling all over the state, writing papers and sending email. It is more expensive than similarly spec'd PC laptops, but holds its value better over time and takes far longer to become obsolete thanks to Apple's excellent operating system.
