I'm sure those new G4s and nifty blue and white G3s are great. But what about those old, first generation Beige (actually, gray. The last beige computer I used was out old Mac Plus) G3's?
Well, they're still pretty nice, and with a few slight modifications, they have several advantages over almost any new apple product.
--- This applies to the desktop models - it's be a bit harder with the towers. Apple adopted the same desktop case with the original G3 line as they had been using for the 7x00 series. In my previous work environment, this had a major advantage. We had 4 computers in the web department - two new G3 desktops, and two old creaky 7200 models. I somehow got stuck with one of these. If your work environment is anything like mine, you know that Joel always comes in to work 2 hours late. Well, due to the nifty interchangeable cases, it is possible to switch your 7200 for his G3/266 by switching cases. Now, you may have to change a few settings and maybe a desktop picture, but with proper execution the illusion can be maintained for an indefinite amount of time.
--- Its much easier to paint racing stripes on a desktop model than a tower.
--- You can only set two or three beers on top of the new case design. You can fit almost and entire case onto a desktop.
--- The Beige G3's have both SCSI and IDE channels. While the Rev 1 versions are limited to 2 IDE devices, this still provides built in flexibility to add and subtract components.
--- One other legacy feature on the Beige G3s is the floppy drive. If you're anything like me, you haven't used it in recent memory, but every once in a while you take the time to blow the dust out - just in case. There is one very good use for these legacy components. Using a small piece of metal (I hacked up a dining hall spoon), a lighter, and some ingenuity, you can turn your floppy drive opening into a nifty bottle opener. It really does work, as soon as I can get a picture of it in action, I'll post it on the web.
There are many other advantages to having an old style G3, and until I have enough money to buy my quad processor G4 box, I'll keep trying to find more.
