| youngnastyman's Full Review: Apple iBook G4 14.1 in. (M9627LL/A) Mac Notebook |
I've been a PC-only user my entire life and was apprehensive about trying out an Apple but I was immensely pleased with what I found. There are the reasons why this machine is useful to me:
-Size: This laptop is "more" portable due to its size. A 15" screen is nice, but I can't lug around something that big to the library and on an airplane. 12" is a good size and Apple puts a quality screen on this one.
-Tech Specs: As a somewhat knowledgeable PC user, I thought the processor speed and RAM seemed a little low, but was surprised to find I was wrong. OS X does not need as much computing power and memory to perform the same operations a PC does. I imagine that if the specs matched, the Mac would blaze ahead. Still, I understand that for some heavy-duty programs like Adobe Photoshop, you might want to get an extra 256mb stick.
-Functionality: Basically, I can do all the things I do on my PC, which includes listening to MP3's (the speakers aren't bad), using Microsoft Office, Email and Internet stuff, a little Photoshop dabbling and lately, downloading and working with digital photos, and lately, messing with movie editors. I think this covers the broad range of uses that people need computers for.
-Stability: This is really the most important one. On my desktop PC, if I opened all of the windows to the functions I mentioned above at the same time, my PC would slow down and maybe even grind to a halt. Astonishingly, I have tons of stuff open all the time on my iBook without noting a substantial decrease in productivity. Additionally, I rarely have to reboot my iBook, once every 3 months, because of a freeze (PC's, as most people know, need to be rebooted frequently).
-Ease of Use: Even simpler than using Windows in many respects. I have found that people who don't know PC's well take to Macs very easily; it's the knowledgeable PC users who throw a fit about finally using a Mac (I know because I am one of those).
-Price: The most important factor? Probably. As a PC fan, I would never have spent money on a product I thought I would hate. However, I got an ipod for free a few months ago through a website that gives them away for signing up for AOL, Blockbuster and similar services. After some digging, I found a website that gives away iBooks. I found the info here:
freegiftlinks .com
It has tons of information about how these free offers work, new articles and picture proof as well. I got my iBook through this method, and if you're someone who's afraid to spend the money like I was, you should definitely look into getting it this way.
