| boote67's Full Review: Apple iPod 3rd Generation White (15 GB) MP3 Player |
After some research I decided to spend my hard earned bucks on an iPod. Although there are cheaper options out there offered by Archos and others, I had read a few bad reviews about it and it came down to a few deciding factors. For instance, I own both a Mac and PC, and I only have a firewire port and no USB 2.0. Although firewire and USB 2.0 are very similar in speed, USB 1.1 is much slower and it would take forever to transfer all my music. Another deciding factor was design. Its a no-brainer that the iPod is much sleeker and I also think that it is easier to use. I know a friend with a 20GB Archos mp3 player and the buttons and screen are a bit too small for my likings.
Okay, so now that I had purchased my 15GB iPod, it was time to open it up and test it out. The directions were pretty simple to follow and I got everything set up pretty quickly. The toughest part for me was to learn how to organize everything in MusicMatch. Despite many horrible reviews and rumors about MusicMatch, once you get past a few bugs its easy to use. Eventually I screwed up somewhere along the line and I had to reset the iPod a few times. I also tried it with my Mac and it is even easier to use than with the PC. However, all of my music is on my PC so I continue to use it with my PC. So now that I've had the iPod about a month, I can say that it is worth the money.
A few things that I love about the iPod are its ease of use. The "On-the-go" playlist makes it easy to create a playlist with any music whenever I want without needing to go back to my computer. I also enjoy the 3 games included with the iPod (Brick, Parachutes, and Solitaire). I know the iPod was not meant for gameplaying, but it keeps me entertained when I really have nothing better to do. The earphones are also comfortable and provide great sound quality. However, I think the equalizer on the iPod is weak because it only lets you choose from presets and you can't manually adjust the balance. I also think that the remote should have some sort of display so I can tell what song is playing and such. Other than that, it is a great purchase.
