| azuki's Full Review: Apple iPod 3rd Generation White (20 GB) MP3 Player |
I wanted an iPod for a new job I started a maintenance worker. Spending 7 hours outside more or less without conversation is bit boring. The new paycheck would also support the initial cost of the unit too.
Its pretty cool looking. I'm a PC user but the interface isn't totally foreign. The touch sensitive buttons are unique and the overall design is decent.
The 20 gig unit is a nice median between all the models. For the extra 100 it costs over the 15 gig, it will pay for a bunch of accessories that cost about 120 separate, and give you 5 more gigs of storage. 40 gigs seems a bit excessive for my personal use, but the price is better than the 4 gig Mini.
Its pretty easy to use, the manual is lacking, and it took me a while to figure out iTunes, but once you get the hange of it, smooth sailing.
The only negatives thus far are the cost, yep, its mighty pricey, more than my car payment, and the accessories are a bit pricey too.
The battery life is a topic of much debate. It doesnt charge in 3 hours as advertised, sometimes it seems to take overnight. Actual duration of the battery depends on your settings, as in backlight, volume, and hard drive access. I estimate about 6 hours of use under fairly normal conditions. So, keep it charged. If it ever freezes on you, it will drain the battery very rapidly if it is not reset. (Press Play/Pause & menu simultaneously for about 5 seconds)
But the good thing however is that its a highly versatile storage device that is primarily designed to play a range of audio files, enough to last you a lifetime. Its amazing. I have about 60 CD's worth of songs, how I could ever reach 600, I dont know. You can also back up regular digital data safely, and large amounts via the firewire. So, if you ever find yourself in a jam, consider the ipod as a decent temporary storage solution.
Also I purchased mine at Best Buy, the only justification in which is that I bought their 4 year extended warranty to cover it. With this kind of money invested in an electronic device, its worth it.
