| pjoker360's Full Review: Apple iPod 3rd Generation White (20 GB) MP3 Player |
I bought my iPod in fall of 2003 after serious contemplation. I decided that, yes, I did want any of my albums or mp3s accessible at any moment, and that yes, $400 was worth the money. Fifteen months later, I still don't regret the decision at all. Though the player has its pros and cons like any other product, the availability of add-on accessories and mainstream compatibility truly make the iPod the mp3 player to purchase.
THE GOOD--This player looks great. Everyone has seen it and it's universally respected on an aesthetic level. The 20GB model is the perfect size for the serious music fan--I've put about 300 albums onto the iPod and I'm still at only 3/4 capacity. You can also import playlists directly from your computer onto the iPod, which is a great feature common to any quality mp3 player. The iPod is small and lightweight, so it's never a bulky burden in your pocket. Also, there are dozens of products you can buy to make the iPod experience better--so far I have a iSkin, which is like a rubber cover that slides over it, and a Belkin FM transmittor, which lets you play iPod songs over your radio, all wireless. It is almost as if the iPod is just the starter package, the piece that allows you to buy all sorts of cool products to go along with it.
THE BAD--this is the first time I've ever wished for something to use AAA batteries instead of an internal rechargeable battery. Half the time I feel I don't get 8 hours of play between charges, and often when I don't use the player for a few days, it freezes up on me. Artist names are often listed 4 or 5 times instead of just once when I scroll down the Browse Artists menu, which is okay but annoying. Maybe my particular iPod or computer is at fault here, but it has hurt the experience somewhat. The iPod does scratch easily--it probably scratches the same as any other player, but with looks this good you notice it a lot more. My solution was to buy an iSkin, a rubber cover that slides over the iPod. It keeps it scratch-free and even protects it from breakage when dropped (which happened to me twice). Overall, the only negatives are the moody battery, often buggy control menus, and the propensity to scratch.
Why iPod?
Besides great looks, top capacity, top compatibility, and top universal acceptance, is that anything else one could want? Not really. And the iPod keeps getting better. Each new generation features easier controls, better battery life, and improved appearance. For my money, I'd recommend the 20GB size--it's big enough to hold more albums than you'll want to ever listen to, yet not so huge that you can only fill half of it. This is one of the coolest, worthwhile purchases I've made in the past couple of years.
