| MUGirl's Full Review: Apple iPod 40 GB White MP3 Player |
I used to think the concept of paying $400 for what is, essentially, a jacked-up Walkman was ridiculous. Then, as my bridesmaids and I were driving across Colorado Springs in April to get from the salon to our hotel, I was thinking, I really want to hear this one song... and the bridesmaid who was driving grabbed her iPod, plugged in the iTrip, and about 5 seconds later the song was on! I mean, talk about a mood boost! It was then I decided I must have one.
So, I finally ordered an iPod, the 40GB, figuring if I'm going to pay that much for a 20GB, I might as well spend an extra $50 and get 40GB - after all, I was planning to have this around for ages if I was spending that much! When it arrived, I spent about a week downloading about 250 CDs to it - with so much extra room to spare I almost doubted that I needed it all. But alas - now I download audiobooks, plenty of files from the iTunes music store, and more.
I own pretty much all of the accessories - the iTrip was ok but the PodFreq is my favorite. We bring it everywhere - in the car, in hotels, in friends' houses, to work - I'm never without my favorite music. This review is more for those who can't necessarily justify the expense. Let me tell you, I waffled for ages as to whether or not I'd spend the money. But really - it's the best $400 I've ever spent. I find myself in a better mood virtually all of the time because I'm always playing my favorite music.
Sure, these puppies get scratched - but get an iSkin and there you go - protected. Do NOT clean with hard napkins or paper towels! You spent that much money already, spend an extra $5 on an eyeglass chamois and clean it right. Tons of people have them - get your name engraved on the back. Apple.com will do it for free if you order your iPod from there (with free shipping, too!)
For as much as I use it, the battery seems to last forever. Helps to recharge while I'm using my computer or by getting a car adapter. It'll charge while you play it - a major plus! And playlists - ahhhh - I set playlists by mood, and I'm rather frequently using the "Rainy Day" list these days - the rain in CA won't stop!!
Finally - read the manual. Really. iTunes can be confusing and it only takes one click to erase everything. You can reload, as I've done many times, but it's a pain. Read up and it won't be a problem.
Hopefully you'll get as much use out of your iPod as I have. Best purchase I've ever made, and I NEVER leave home without it. (In fact, it'll save room and cost on stereo systems! Just get a set of speakers for each room and plug your iPod in, and you have your full music collection at your fingertips in any room in your house!)
