Pros: Size, Looks Beautiful, Ease of Use, Good Battery Life.
Cons: No Delete feature, earphones are serviceable but not fantastic.
The Bottom Line: Recommended for music lovers, and travellers. Newer versions are available to suit different needs such as the iPod Photo, need something smaller? Shuffle or Mini are for you.
kurtles's Full Review: Apple iPod photo 4th Generation (20 GB) MP3 Player
Being a music lover, I'd been thinking about a portable music player for quite some time, this iPod became the product of choice. The main reasons being it's good name, favourable reviews, nice looks and huge hard drive! I'm glad I made my choice, and so will you.
At $499 Aussie(~$350 US) dollars it's not a small sum to be spending on an anti-boredom device, but if you travel extensively on the train, exercise, ride or walk to work, and during this time you need something to keep you occupied, an iPod fills this void perfectly without adding too much to your daily baggage.
What I've Loved
The 20GB Hard Drive, the sleek and sexy design, how light it is, it's easy to use menu, no difficulty in connecting to my PC, transferring music or storing general files on the hard drive. iTunes is easy to use. Does what it is designed for and does it well.
What I Didn't Love
No way to delete a song without plugging into computer, sometimes I find the wheel too responsive... ie when giving a song a rating it's hard to isolate the correct star, I find the wheel a bit wearying to use....for example when scrolling through your list of a 1000 or so songs or artist names.
Suggestions
Buy a slip case or other protection straight away, as the iPod is VERY easy to scratch or scuff, especially the back.
Buy a new set of headphones, this has two purposes, firstly it is less likely that people know you have an iPod, which means sad as this is to say that you are less likely to be mugged for your music gear. The earphones are very distinctive.
Secondly the bass and sound quality of the shipped phones are pretty crappy. You don't really realise this until you plug a new set of phones in, for example I bought myself a pair of Sennheiser HD 437's and was AMAZED at the difference, the bass is the major improvement, but you'll also approve of the clarity and quality of the sound if you buy a good set or ear or head phones.
In Retrospect
I'm very glad I bought my iPod, it works well, i've used it pretty much every day since i've had it, it stores more songs then you need and you aren't restricted with what you can store on it, simply pluggin it in and using it as an external hard drive works GREEEAAAT.
Other then a few small annoyances and drawbacks, I'm loving it, and I'm sure most of you people will too!
Happy Podding!
