This is not your mother's citrus, as sharp and artificial as 80’s hairstyles…
And it’s just as surely not MY mother's citrus, over powered by orange blossoms, with the personality of yesterday’s ginger ale.
Guerlain’s Pamplelune, part of the original Aqua Allegoria line is my all-time favorite example of the PROPER use of Grapefruit as a top note, with none of the chemical undertones of lesser perfumes. Guerlain has given their ‘fresh citrus’ the barest sweetness by vanilla, a bit of warm spice from bergamot and grounded by a dose of patchouli that is not so much something that you smell the blend as it is used to anchor the soaring top notes. Pamplelune has a nice sharp ‘bite’ to the initial application that’s a natural pick-me-up on a cloudy morning, and is blessed with a surprising staying power for a citrus cologne, as the lighter grapefruit zest wears to reveal pettigrain.
Since it came out around the turn of the last century, the Aqua Allegoria line has created mostly mild-mannered scents – this one is well-behaved, but ‘mild’ it is not. The bee-hive shaped bottle is capped with the line’s ‘honeycomb’ motif, and the spray caps have proven reliable to the last spritz.
All in all, Pamplelune is one of the great values in perfume for anyone who’s a fan of citrusy scents, and well worth investing in the full-sized bottle.
