Pros: Incredibly low price, amazing sound quality, frequency response, deep bass for size
Cons: Better manual (with recommended subwoofer frequency cutoff) would be good

...that you would be really happy with a Marantz receiver. I have a SR-5200 in my bedroom. It is honestly rated at 85 watts a channel. I have it hooked up to Paradigm Atoms, which are very similar in construction and quality to your Athenas. And I love it. Nice, full, rich sound. In fact, if I had it all to do over again, I would have probably bought a Marantz receiver for my main system as well.

I actually started to have the same set of doubts about 3 months ago. I also noticed the relatively high THD, 40 Hz and that it is rated into 6 Ohms. I even looked at Maratz SR-4500 (as well as new line of Panasonic XR digitally-amped receivers).

It is unfortunate I cannot audition a couple of receivers side by side and decide which one is better and worth the price for me. I might try either the Marantz or the Panasonic XR.

Thanks for your input!

I certainly agree with that statement. Listening to good receivers can also be bad.

Say, now that you have a set of nice speakers, maybe its time to upgrade that receiver :)

A quick look at the specs of your Panasonic shows me a couple of things:

Stereo Mode Power 100 Watt @ 6 ohm, 40 Hz - 20 kHz, THD: 0.9%

Surround Mode Power 100 Watt @ 6 ohm, 1 kHz, THD: 0.9%

First, they are listing the power that it would drive into 6 ohms. This is a common trick to make it seem more powerful than it is, as the power would be less at 8 ohms, which is what most speakers are really at.

Second, the power and distortion are only rated over part of the audible frequency range, another common trick to make things seem more powerful than they are. This is why "70-watt" Denon receivers are often more powerful than "100-Watt" mass consumer brand receivers.

Third, that Total Harmonic Distortion is really high.

For comparison, here are the specs from the Marantz Sr-4500:

Power Output at 8 ohms: 80W x 7, THD is less than 0.08%, 20 Hz - 20 kHz.

Note how the Marantz is rated into 8 ohms, over the full audible range. Also note that the THD is less than 1/10 of the Panasonic. The 4500 is on clearance right now for only $299 at www.cambridesoundworks.com. Denon and Onkyo receivers are of similar quality and can often be found at reasonable prices on the net.

Onkyo, Denon, or Marantz would do these justice. They all also feature high-current power, which gives a fuller, richer overall sound.

Jon

Unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to get them at the store where I can get them at an employee discount :-(
But you are probably right, the AS-F2 is still available and is definitely worth checking out along with the AS-F1 I reviewed.

I'm waiting to hear from Athena about the F-2 speakers. As far as I know they are NOT discontinued. There are a lot of places in California that sell them, and they have them in stock.

I wish I could get the AS-F2 model (discontinued). They are even heavier and I could save even more :-)

Those things are heavy, aren't they? That's a generous employee discount. Makes me want to work for an electronics store.
