| eyeshot's Full Review: Audiophase CDT420M Personal CD Player |
Mt expectations weren't that high when I picked up the audiophase CDT420M personal cd player. After all, it was $39.99 at Best Buy. All I wanted was a cd based player that will play MP3 cd's that accepted an AC adapter. Since my collection is all backed up in MP3 format on CD already, while I'm still waiting a bit to see what hard drive based MP3 players are going to offer, and since it would be run through my darkroom stereo, it seemed to fit the bill perfectly. I picked up a ac adapter ($13)to go with it and went home.
Right out of the box, it was funny. I threw in some new batteries, and I didn't think it even worked. Nothing lit up and the cd wasn't spinning. I checked the batteries and they were in correctly. Hmmm, the regrets of cheaping out were starting to creep in. So I put in another CD and pressed play again. Nothing. So I hold down play and after about 3 seconds of pressure it fires up. Weird but, whatever, like I said my expectations weren't high.
So I set up the 6v power adapter, which fell into all it's guidelines and couldn't get it to power up again. Dang. Check the polarity, the charging switch, and that I had removed the batteries (can't use the ac adapter with them in). Nothing. Went out and got another power adapter($18). Nothing.
Then I looked down and the LCD display was crooked and turned about 20 degrees clockwise. Dang, dang. Enough, back it went to Best Buy.
I ended up getting the $80 Sony Car Ready CD/MP3 portable. It also came with an ac adapter which I hadn't noticed before. Had I noticed that, I would have just gotten that one to start. So far it's been great and does the simple thing I need done, decode MP3 cd's. It also supports the MP3 tagging which the Audiophase didn't. Not a huge deal but I do like having it now since all my MP3's are tagged and it does help sort through what's on a disk. I got a non-MP3 Sony Car Ready about 4 years ago and it still works like a champ, it just doesn't do the MP3 decoding. Hope this one does as well.
Moral of the story, while we all know you get what you pay for, sometimes you don't even get that.
