Pros:Good depth of flavor; Easy to find

Cons:Not a premium rum, so it may not be good enough for some

The Bottom Line: Bacardi Gold is a very good rum with more flavor than standard light rum, but it lacks the "snob appeal" of more premium products.

Bacardi is one of the leading names in the world of rum with a product line that consists of several different styles and variations of this sugar- based liquor. Headquartered in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Bacardi is a company whose products have been tried by more of the world’s people than nearly any other type of liquor. And one of this company’s popular products is Bacardi Gold, a dark rum with more flavor and character than most ordinary rum.

Basic Characteristics of This Rum:

Bacardi Gold has a tan/gold color and the body of the liquor is crystal clear. The nose of this liquor is pungent and alcoholic, like one expects, with aromas of wood and burnt sugar or molasses.

The taste of Bacardi Gold could be described as a dab of sweet sugar followed by a rush of dryness. There are hints of wood- like flavors, nuts, and an almost syrup- like taste and consistency that seems like a mixture of caramelized sugar syrup, alcohol, and even a touch of vanilla.

Bacardi produces this liquor using molasses as a base with sugar cane juices and sugar residues. The mixture is charcoal- filtered and aged for two years in oak barrels- longer than Bacardi light rum. And unlike Bacardi light, Bacardi Gold is not re- filtered after the aging process is complete.

This product contains an alcohol content of 40 percent by volume (80 proof), with 69 calories, 8 mg of sodium, zero fat, zero protein, and zero carbohydrates per 1 oz. (30 ml) serving. It is sold in various metric sized bottles, ranging from 375 ml up to the large 1.75 liter size.

Final Thoughts:

Bacardi is probably the most popular maker of rum in the world, with more than a dozen rum products to match most any taste or occasion. This company ships its products all over the world, with the bulk of its exports shipped north to the United States.

Bacardi Gold is a little more flavorful than ordinary light rums, with a more pronounced taste of oak and a more caramel- like sensation on the palate. The main ingredient in all rum products is sugar and/or molasses and you can taste these ingredients when you take a sip straight from the bottle, hiding behind the strong alcoholic presence. I have found that I can taste the non- alcoholic attributes best in the aftertaste. It’s sometimes difficult to notice other flavors when the alcoholic taste is so dominant. But wait a few minutes after you finish a sip or two and you will notice the sweet, woody taste of Bacardi Gold. It’s there, but you need to get around the alcohol to find it.

Another way to discover what Bacardi Gold tastes like at its foundation is to mix the liquor with a small amount of water. Or, pour a shot over ice in a highball glass. The liquor will melt the ice very quickly and you will be able to better discern the presence of other taste sensations in this liquor.

Bacardi Gold makes a good mixer for many drinks that call for rum. Because it is made with a base of molasses and sugar, run can generally be mixed with just about anything that is sweet. Most everyone has mixed rum with cola, but that is just one of the many common beverages that taste good combined with a little Bacardi Gold. Actually, I prefer Bacardi Gold over Bacardi light rum in many mixed drinks. Not just tropical, fruity drinks but also some of the more common drinks, like rum & cola and rum screwdrivers (rum and orange juice). I think the added flavor dimensions in Bacardi Gold make it a more flavorful alternative to mixed drinks that call for this popular liquor. And for all you low- carb freaks out there, I am pleased to announce that Bacardi Gold has no carbohydrates at all. If you mix it with another beverage that is also free of those evil carbs, you will have a zero- carb drink. One popular choice in this arena is Diet Coke mixed with rum. There are still some calories to deal with, but the carb count is zero.

Most questions about this product can be answered by visiting the company web site,, or by calling 800-222-2734. The Bacardi web site, although a little cluttered with moving images and music in the background, can still answer many of your questions about this and other Bacardi products. The Bacardi line has been expanding quickly in recent years, with the company moving into the area of flavored rums. It now offers lemon, orange, vanilla, and other variations on the standard formula.

Bacardi Gold is a good- tasting rum that is easy to locate and sold at a fair price. Most any liquor store that carries rum will have this and other Bacardi products. And because it’s a product that has a wide distribution base with a good degree of economies of scale, the price of Bacardi Gold isn’t too bad. A 750 ml bottle can often be found selling for about $13 while a one liter (1000 ml) bottle retails for about $16. These price levels make Bacardi Gold a good value for the money. It may not be the greatest tasting rum on the market, but it is quite good for what you pay. Add to that the generous versatility of Bacardi Gold and you have the makings of a very good, reliable brand of rum from the people at Bacardi.
