| soupcraze's Full Review: Beltronics Express 910 Radar Detector |
The Bel Express 910 is the least expensive radar detector produced by Beltronics. It only differs from other models in the Express series (Except the 946) by the features it has. Other than that, the Bel Express 910 shares the same frame as the other Express units. I'm not a fan of using cheap radar detectors (Less than $100), but I felt some comfort with the Bel Express 910 on the windshield. Here's what I found with the Bel Express 910.
-Price-
*The Bel Express 910 is typically priced in the mid-$70's to the $80's. This is on the cheaper end of radar detectors. Many people assume that at this price you're getting junk, while some are indifferent to radar detectors all together and think each one is the same. The Bel Express 910 has a $99.95 MSRP from Beltronics, but can obviously be found for less money online. This makes it quite competitive against units from Cobra and Whistler. Cobra is mostly crap, while Whistler does offer bang-for-the-buck models in this price range. When it comes to deciding between the Bel Express 910 and the Whistlers, it often comes down to consumer loyalty. Many people that I know are Whistler loyalists and would practically only buy Whistler detectors. The Bel Express 910 does offer an edge over something such as the Whistler DE-1743 when it comes to hands-down performance, but the Whistlers are more plentiful in features. So if you want just some of the best performance for under $100, then the Bel Express 910 is an excellent choice. If you want more features, then pay a little more for the Bel Express 920 or go for a Whistler.
-Performance-
*The Bel Express 910 shares the same characteristics as the more expensive 920 and 930 models. If you often find yourself going around 15mph over the speed limit, the Bel Express 910 can prove to be a sufficient device that will help you slow down before you're clocked by a cop. With Beltronics, you get what you pay for. They know how to make excellent units at great prices. But there's one thing that Beltronics doesn't know how to do, and that's putting crap in a box. The Bel Express 910 effectively demonstrates it with its K and Ka band performance. When compared to a similarily priced Whistler DE-1743, the Bel Express 910 offers more warning time when it comes to K-Band performance. Then again, with Ka-Band, the Bel Express 910 once again manages to exceed what Whistler has to offer. When it comes to something like a Cobra ESD-9110 or ESD-9210, the Bel Express 910 has no trouble in sending it to the trash can. However, when you're buying the Bel Express 910, you're buying a bare-bones model. It unfortunately lacks voice alerts which you find on the Whistler DE-1743. If you're not all too good with identifying threats visually or by specific tones, a Whistler maybe more up your sleeve. However, if you want a radar that you can definitely trust so little money, the Bel Express 910 packs in the power you need.
-Ease of Use & Features-
*The Bel Express 910 is the bare-bones model in Bel Express line. However, bare-bones by no means says that it can't pick up radar effectively. The Bel Express 910 has a large easy to read icon display which also has a numeric counter that will show you how strong the radar strength is. The text display on the Bel Express 930 is easier to read. But if you can't dish out over $100 for a radar and want a red text display, then a Whistler DE-1753 might suffice. The Bel Express 910 is a fairly easy detector to use. The largest difference between the Bel Express 910 and the more expensive models is its lack of voice alerts. Some people like voice alerts, and some are indifferent. It proves to be very effective if you are a driver that wants to keep your eyes on the road and don't want to memorize tonal alerts. If you want voice alerts, go for the more expensive Bel Express 920 or a Whistler. The Bel Express 910 is a very simplistic and easy detector to use. It has four buttons located on top of it to control it. The first turns the detector on and off. The second button dims the display which can make it either darker or brighter. The third button controls the volume. I find it to be a little annoying to use since it's only one button to control the volume. I prefer having two discrete buttons to control the volume. But you eventually get the hang of it. The last button is the City/Highway mode feature which lets you switch between the settings. Overall, it's just like the other Bel Express models, and is fairly simple to use.
-The Verdict-
*The Bel Express 910 is one of the best performing detectors that you can purchase for under $100. Beltronics knows how to make great products at simply unbelievable prices. If you don't need anything fancy and just want to have a detector that will actually work, then the Bel Express 910 is a great choice. But if you want more features, then you should go for a more expensive Bel Express or Whistler has a lot of great units to offer with excellent features, but at the cost of some performance.
