| ep01's Full Review: BenQ PB6110 DLP Projector |
I bought this projector mainly for home theatre use. So far, it has worked very well. I have it connected directly to a computer, which I use to play DVD's, watch television (HD tuner board), etc. Even with svga (800x600) native resolution, the video quality is excellent, especially with DVD and HD broadcasts. You will save a significant amount of money over the xga models also.
The image is bright enough that it can be seen with a moderate amount of light in the room, but it looks much better in total darkness. You can hear the cooling fans running, but it isn't real loud, and I don't notice it with movies playing. The throw ratio is better than the pb6100, but you will still need to place the projector fairly far from the wall to have a decent screen size, which isn't a problem as long as the room you will be using it in isn't too small (you may want to do the screen size calculations before you buy). The image does project upward a little from the projector, so you may need to raise the rear a little, but you certainly don't need a ceiling mount (although one is available) as was suggested in another review.
The projector provides d-sub (analog RGB/component), s-video and composite video inputs. There is no DVI, but I doubt it would make that much difference in video quality. You can connect component video through an optional d-sub breakout cable, but I would just use a computer and forget about the other video inputs if at all possible. The projector is a good size for stationary use, but I would look for a smaller, lighter one (Benq makes several of these) if you plan to carry it around often.
One other thing to consider with this projector is the cost of replacement lamps. The lamps are very expensive ($400+). The lamp is rated for 2000 hours, or 3000 hours in 'economic mode' (it isn't quite as bright, but the video is fine). If you don't plan on using the projector very often, this won't be a problem at all; but otherwise I would recommend calculating how much you will spend on replacement lamps and use this as a factor when selecting a projector.
Overall though, this is a very impressive projector. You will get an amazing display for a very reasonable price.
