Pros: ultracompact, ultraversatile, quiet, lightweight, strong
Cons: haven't found any in nearly 10 years of ownership, just use the splash cover!
The Bottom Line: for space-challenged cooks wanting versatility and capability, this is hard to beat. Great price!

| johnr55's Full Review: Bosch MUM4622UC Compact Series Mixer |
This is the same mixer that has been sold as a Siemens and a Toastmaster, though all are made by Bosch. Rather than have a conventional mixing head that raises up and down, this little Bosch has a rotating protruding arm with 4 positions for the different functions it performs. For conventional mixing, the head is as seen in the photo, using a single whisk, beater or paddle. Unlike the Kitchen Aid's motion, the Bosch rotation is entirely from the middle of the head, with the beater/whisk/hook traveling at an angle. It works beautifully, but certainly can douse you with ingredients if you crank it up without the splash cover! Rotate the head straight down, and the blender mounts on top of the arm. This is also used for the food processor accessory. There is then a drive on the back side for the meat grinder. Angle a little different and you can use the slicer accessory. All in a very, very small amount of counter space. I haven't seen any equivalent mixer that doesn't take much more room. In addition, somehow Bosch has managed to make this machine very light, easily held in one hand. That can make it easy to store on a high shelf. There are 4 speeds, plus a pulse function.
How does it all work? Beautifully! Though obviously not designed for the duty load of its larger Universal relative, for all conventional mixing duties it is superb. The dough hook will easily handle 2 loaves of white bread or 1 of whole wheat. Cakes, frostings, meringues, all done to perfection. Just keep that splash cover on! The blender is powerful and quiet, though smaller in capacity than the largest on the market. The meat grinder works as well as the Kitchen Aid, and the food processor accessory is powerful and quick, as it should be. I haven't used the slicer accessory much but when I did, it did its job. I also have the ice cream maker accessory and it works as it should.
I bought my first Compact back in the 90's when it had a smaller motor, and bought a second a couple of years ago when I got a good deal. All the accessories are interchangeable. Incidentally, though both machines have had extensive use, I've never had a single problem with either.
Though I have several other mixers, I reach for this one when I want to do a 'quick and dirty' recipe, then back it goes into its cubbyhole.
Highly recommended for the average kitchen--no one will believe the amount of work you can get out of this little wonder!
