| anami3737's Full Review: Bosch MUM6630 Universal Series 700 Watts Stand Mix... |
The Bosch Universal mixer has been around for many years; families tell stories of the bread made by this machine. It is a powerful, dependable machine, capable of doing many tasks. My experience with this machine is based on using a friend's Universal to learn to make bread. It turned out to be remarkably easy!
The Bosch MUM6630 Stand Mixer is a package that offers many accessories: 6 qt. Heavy Duty Plastic Mixing Bowl with cover, heavy stainless steel dough hook and twin beating whisks, separate cutting/shredding set w/3 disks, stainless steel bowl w/cover and mixing hook, stirring device for small bowl, unbreakable 6 cup blender.
The Universal has 3 speeds and a pulse function. It has a powerful 700 watt motor and overload and restart motor protection. The surface of the mixer is easy to clean and there is convenient cord storage. The unit is 9" x 13" x 10" high. It has a tried and true design. Bosch has engineered a dependable, durable kitchen machine.
The real proof comes when you start mixing bread--the Universal can make 6 two-lb loaves of bread at one time--and it just settles down and works like a trooper! I measured the water, put in 1/2 the flour, honey, oil and yeast and pulsed it a few times. After letting it run for a few minutes, I started adding more flour till the dough made a ball that cleaned the sides of the bowl. After that it was just let the machine knead the dough with that big dough hook. The bread turned out great. And it convinced me that I wanted to buy a Bosch.
Bosch makes wonderful kitchen tools. I wound up buying a Bosch Concept 7 instead of the Universal because I found one on sale. Same basic machine inside, just a little differently designed base. While I still love how the mixer works, I wish I had purchased a Universal because the Concept 7 requires an adapter ($89) to use many of the accessories. That extra money would have purchased a food/meat grinder for the Universal!
There are many attachments available for the Universal to make it a complete kitchen machine: a slicer/shredder, a food processor, a citrus juicer, a food/meat grinder, fruit and berry press, pasta maker.
If you like to cook, can, garden, preserve, freeze foods--well, this mixer can really cut down your work load! And if you live in the city and just like to feed your friends, it will show off your cooking skills . If you are just getting started and wanting to learn to be a better cook, the Universal will give you all the power and help you need to explore the fascinating world of foods. My grandmother was a professional chef and always told me that having the right tools made it easy to do a good job.
She was right!
UPDATE: June 2005
I recently gave my Concept 7 to my son who has health problems and needs to concentrate on nutrition. And I will be purchasing a Bosch Universal for myself. I plan to order the New Style stainless steel bowl to go with it.
