| plewa's Full Review: Bosch SHY66C02 / SHY66C06 24 in. Built-in Dishwash... |
We purchased our first dishwasher in 1982 when we had a complete remodel of the kitchen in our older home that was built in 1939. It was great to have dishes washed automatically and with the hot water and strong detergent the dishes were cleaner and sanitized than if we had washed by hand. Well after two top-end KitchenAid dishwashers, we made a replacement with a Bosch Black SHY66C0 dishwasher based on the recommendation of our installer/appliance serviceman. The Bosch dishwasher is in place and I am truly amazed with its energy efficiency, quiet operation and how well it cleans dishes, pots and pans and broiler pans.
Our old KitchenAid Supurba was supposed to be "Whisper Quiet," however, it was too noisy to have a telephone conversation in the kitchen. We could hear the dishwasher operate even in the upstairs bedrooms. Since the dishwasher cleaned reasonably well we tolerated the noise, that is until, after 9 years of service, the upper bearing on the motor began to fail. Then we experienced a rather loud buzzing sound throughout the washing cycles.
I read Epinions on the reviews on all of the Bosch dishwashers evaluated and I was satisfied with the publics response with the product line. My wife and I do most of our cooking from scratch, we make all of our family's bread, prepare not only our breakfast and dinner, but also prepare lunch that we take to our work. We also do a lot of canning from our garden so we have at least one or two dish washing loads per day. That is until we began to use the Bosch SHY66C0. The size of the tank is substantially larger than our old dishwasher and the racks accommodate a larger number of dishes. Because of this we have fewer number of loads per week.
It is exceedingly important to have the dishwasher installed by a serviceman who has been trained to install Bosch dishwashers. They are different. Our neighborhood association highly recommended our independent serviceman and he has installed many Bosch dishwashers over the years and he pointed out that he has had to repair botched jobs by other installers (especially those that were associated with department stores and appliance stores). So if you decide on this product spend the time in finding an experienced, competent installer. In addition our serviceman has also repaired a number of Bosch dishwashers and he said that the repair frequency was average, but that parts are readily available. Again you must find a repair person who knows how to install the parts properly. The construction of the dishwasher is excellent. It is completely enclosed from the top to the bottom. It has side panels on all 4 sides and the bottom of the dishwasher is completely sealed.
The operation of the Bosch dishwasher is remarkable. The first thing that you notice, after the enlarged stainless steel washtub, is the low level of noise during its operation. It makes a swishing sound, even the water intake and draining were much quieter than our old dishwasher. Indeed, it is not silent; you will know if it on by its sound. But the sound is very low and we appreciate it. The cleaning capacity is excellent.
I was surprised that it has only one detergent cup, and for a regular wash we use a rounded tablespoon of enzyme-based (Wal-Mart, or Sams Club) detergent. This is about half of what we used in our old dishwasher. For the pots and pans scrub we use about 1.5 Tbs of detergent. Our stainless steel pots and pans come out shining. It is remarkable. I compared pots washed by the Bosch dishwasher with clean pots from our cabinets that were previously washed with our KitchenAid and you could see a difference. We nearly always use the OptiMiser option with our wash cycles to reduce energy and water use. Under the regular wash cycle it can consume as little as 4.2 gal of water and with the delicate/economy cycle (with the OptiMiser option) it will consume as little as 3.1 gal of hot water. These are much lower levels of hot water usage than our old dishwasher. The rinse aid dispenser is convenient although we reduced the amount of rinse aid consumed following the instruction booklet. Initially I was concerned about the lack of a fan-type dryer, but the dishes come out reasonable dry, however, they are HOT. We open the dishwasher, pull the racks out and let them cool for a minute or so before we handle the dishes.
I had a Sears coupon for 10% off of the price and I received a Sears rebate for delivery so I was able to purchase the dishwasher at a reasonable price for the quality. It complements our kitchen decor, the exterior is well finished and a wrap around seal merge the sides of the dishwasher so that no gap is seen with our wood cabinets and the sides of the dishwasher.
This Bosch dishwasher has met or exceeded our expectations. I highly recommend this product.
