Hi there. I went and purchased a pair of Bose 51's for my backyard. Before I did, I spend alot of time on the internet looking at rock speakers. I knew I wanted the speakers near the ground, as that is where I put the wiring. I didn't really want conduit running up the side of my house so I could install speakers under the eaves (although it is a two story house and it would be wierd installing the speakers all the way up there). so, I thought I wanted rock speakers. The hard part was inorder to listen to them, I had to buy them first. I'd rather hear it, then decide to fork out some dollars.
So, I went to nation-wide electronics store. They had some cheap ($100/pr) rock speakers and the bose 51. We hooked them up in the showroom and I was amazed! The bose 51' had so much range. The low end was awesome (a sign of good speakers is how much low-end(bass) they can produce (highs and mids are easy to come by). The rock speakers sound tin-can-ish, while the Bose were vibrant, warm and full.
But you never really now how it will sound until you get them home. I tried them at the house (buried them half-way) and my opinion didn't change... and I even set them about 30 feet apart. They sound great.
While they are expense, you get what you pay for.... and I recommend paying for these. However, if you don't listen to music (or talk-radio) that has low-end in it, don't waste your money... get the eave or rock speakers.
