| jeanlaroche's Full Review: BOSS AUDIO SYSTEMS MP3-3030R Car CD Player |
I bought the Boss 3030 because I wanted a car stereo that could play mp3s, with an additional aux input for my Nomad (mp3 jukebox), and I didn't want to spend hundreds. For the price, this is quite good. It does indeed play mp3, has a RCA aux input, and sounds reasonably good. On the + side, it remembers where you were in the CD/mp3 and starts there when powered back up, it's fairly responsive (going from track to track is nearly instantaneous, but loading an mp3 CD takes a few seconds, and switching input - aux/radio - takes 1/2 second, not too bad but you wonder why...). The EQ settings are nice. I also like the volume knob (I really dislike car stereos that only have buttons). On the - side, I found it to be quite noisy: the background hiss is quite audible (especially at high volumes). It's only noticeable when not driving - at least in my car! - but it's still a bit annoying. Also, navigating mp3 CDs is tedious. By default, it seems like it plays the mp3s on the CD in alphabetical order (based on the file name) if there in the root directory, which is very strange if the file name does not start with the album, followed by track number etc. Going to a specific track is easy if you know the track number on the mp3 CD (i.e., according to its weird way of sorting the tracks), but tedious if you're looking for a specific track (entering the track name takes a while). I'm not sure how other mp3 players manage that, though. This is my first mp3-enabled car stereo.
All in all, I'm fairly satisfied with the unit...
Added in april 2004: After putting this unit in my other car, replacing an old stereo, I noticed that the radio reception isn't that good at all. Weak radio stations that came out fairly clear in my previous radio are very noisy with this one, even when reception is switched to "mono". I'd say the quality of the radio receiver is fairly lower than average (based on comparisons with my previous radio in the same car/antenna, and with then radio in my other car).
