| Briss's Full Review: JVC GR-DVL9800 Mini DV Camcorder |
I really wanted to write this epinion sooner, but I haven't had many opportunities to use our JVC GR-DVL9800U camcorder. So I will discuss the features that I have had the opportunity to use.
I have seen and used several camcorders, but this one has the best picture that I have seen. We have used the camcorder in all the different recording modes and have found that you really can tell a difference in the progressive scan mode. Now, everything we do is in progressive scan.
The picture quality is sharp and accurate and has a very crisp feel to it. The colors are as brilliant as can be.
This camcorder picks up sound very well, but it doesn't seem overwhelmed by noise. By that, I mean that background noise stays in the background and doesn't make the sound or voices that you are recording difficult to hear.
I have transferred a couple of MiniDV tapes to SuperVHS and the tapes have turned out just as good as the original. This is fairly simple to do, too. So don't be scared to try it yourself.
I have not had a need to record from our SuperVHS to MiniDV, yet. But, I be giving it a try soon.
Also, I haven't shot any digital stills with this camcorder, yet. I bought it for the recording ability and the fact that you can take digital stills is a bonus. The photos are saved onto a MultiMediaCard that you can download onto your PC.
I did, however, purchase Studio DV for our computer. When we bought our camcorder JVC had a special offer for Studio DV.
When we first bought the camcorder it had just came out and finding accessories for it was rather difficult. Now, a year later, accessories are easier to come by, but we still find the best selection on JVC's website. We have bought bags, batteries, tapes, cleaner tapes, and the nifty little rain jacket for our camcorder.
There are two things that JVC forget when they designed this camcorder. The first is a lens cap to help protect the lens when it's not in use.
The second thing is night shot or a light for shooting in low light. These recordings tend to be too dark to figure out what you were shooting at.
The image stabilization is pretty good. Like all camcorders, you just have to move slow and deliberate and you'll be alright. You don't want a remake of The Blair Witch Project.
The camcorder itself is very lightweight and easy to handle and maneuver around with. The buttons, switches, and knobs are easily located and easy to use with one hand.
The LCD and viewfinder are both easy to work with. However, when you use the LCD the battery will not last as long.
When you are loading or unloading the tape or battery there are other components that tend to get in the way, but when you are dealing with something this small I think that is to be expected.
