| bblake12's Full Review: JVC GR-DVL510 Mini DV Camcorder |
This is a great buy for the novice or experienced video enthusiast. I had last years model 310 and stepped up to the 510 this year. JVC made some improvements but they also cut some features apparently to save cost. The good things: The video camera has great resolution and zoom. The images are crystal clear and the sound quality is great. The fire wire and USB connections are a plus as well. All the controls are on the top of the video camera which makes it very easy to control. The video camera has all the standard editing features including 11 different fade wipe options. The video camera can be operated in either automatic or manual mode. As listed above all the controls are within easy reach for the manual mode. The automatic mode is recommended as it takes in account lighting conditions and other issues. This video camera has one feature that other video cameras do not, Digital Still Images. This video camera has a separate memory card for storing snapshots similar to the way a Digital Camera would. There is a control on the top labeled “Snap shot” and when this is pressed, a still image is taken of whatever the video camera is pointing at. This is a nice feature but the quality of the image does not compare to a Digital Camera still image. Also be advised if you are videotaping an event and you use the Snap Shot feature then your taping is paused for 10-20 seconds while the image is saved. This means you will have a gap in your taping.
Now the cons: The biggest flaw and a reduction from last year. The battery charger is now part of the video camera with an optional charger available. This means that you have to plug the video camera in to charge the battery which can be a precarious issue and you run the risk of dropping the video camera if you accidentally yank the cord. If you have small children this could be an issue. It also adds a little to the weight of the video camera. The other issue for me is the the tape door opens on the bottom of the video camera. Which means you have to turn the video camera over to change tapes. This is ergonomically incorrect and a pain. Lastly the nightlight luminescence has been reduced so taping in the dark is not as bright as it was.
In conclusion, having owned 2 JVC video cameras, I would recommend this video camera 100%. There are some minor issues but overall the quality is great and ease of use is fantastic.
