Sony's introduction of the 'Digital 8' format has been a godsend for many people. In short it means that you get digital pictures and sound on to a Hi-8 tape, which is smaller and more friendly than the usual VHS, and is compatible with all 8mm films, allowing the playback of previously recorded analogue tapes.
The Digital 8 format has been implemented into the entry level DCR-TRV 120, which is similar to it's more advanced brother the 320, except that it lacks a 'Memory Stick' - basically Sony's file carrier between camcorder, MiniDisc and PC.
But still, the 120 has many points going for it, the first being it's $150 cheaper than the 320. Here are it's features:
2.5 screen AND Speaker: Now seen as standard on most models, however the 120 includes a small speaker which is very handy during the playback of films. The screen isn't too impressive, and is very discreet. I would much prefer a Viewfinder like those on Sharp models, it just makes life a lot easier. But having said that, the screen is still easy to put up with, and I suppose it makes the camera look very compact.
100x zoom: This is a very powerful zoom lens indeed. Picture clarity stays solid as you zoom in and out, with no obvious pixel distortion.
Super Nightshot: This nifty feature allows you to film in the dark by analysing and correcting the light levels. The effects are very good, if not reminiscent of night vision goggles.
Super Steady Shot: Again, technology allows you some erratic movements, as the camera can correct these out, giving a far more steady picture on the playback. It does make the shot a lot steadier, but not that much: after all, it's a lot to ask of the camera to differentiate between an intentional and unintentional movement.
Innovative battery: The Ion Lithium battery is very good, and displays it's remaining life in minutes: so you'll always know how much recording time you have got left.
Overall: The DCR-TRV 120 comes pack with a host of extras, such as the super laser link, the ilink, and remote control, and rechargeable battery. It represents excellent value for money for a digital camcorder, and with the Memory Stick, you can always upgrade it later.
