I purchased my RCA CC6151 camcorder in March of 1998. I wanted a camcorder to preserve memories of places we have been and things we have done. My children are getting older every day, and a camera just does not do the trick. I attend plays and such at my children's school, and my camcorder comes in handy for recording these special times.
I had been wanting a camcorder for 2 years before we finally bought this one. We went to different electronic stores and finally decided to buy a camcorder in the electronics department at WalMart. For the amount of money I was willing to spend, this camcorder has been a great investment so far. My camcorder was on sale, so that made it more desirable to me. I paid $299.00 plus tax for this RCA camcorder.
Disclaimer: There are some features of this camcorder that I have not used yet. If there are nothing written, that means, I am not sure what the feature means. As I use this camcorder more, I will try to find the booklet that came with it, and I will add more to my opinion. Thank you.
**My RCA CC6151 Camcorder**
*This particular camcorder is small and lightweight.That was one of the features I was looking for in a handheld camcorder. My camcorder weighs approximately 6 pounds with the battery attached. If the camcorder is in its case with tapes and the battery charger in it, the total weight is approximately 12-14 pounds. This does not overly tire me out right away, which is a big plus in deciding what I want to lug around when travelling or whatever I want to record.
*My camcorder looks identical to the one in the picture. It is black and made mostly out of plastic. The eye piece of my camcorder is rubbery and black also. On the front of the camcorder is the lense. My camcorder has a solid black-plastic, shutter type covering over the lense. This is to protect it from getting dirty or scratched.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On the left-hand side of the camcorder is the eject button for the battery pack. Also on the left hand side of the camcorder is a button to open the camcorder. This is where you place the VHS tape you want to record on.
**Another thing located on the left-hand side of the camcorder is a large dial. There is where the different features of the camcorder are located. The dial has different things stamped on it. They are:
**Man{short for manual}.
**Auto {short for automatic}
**Sepia. Turn this dial until the red arrow points at Sepia. this darkens your picture and makes it look old. I have used this once so far.
**Shdw {short for shadow}.
**Haze. As the word says, you can make it look hazy if that is the results you want while camcording.
**1/1000.
**There are also 2 separate profiles in a square. One is to make the background dark, and the other is to make the background light.
**One last thing on this dial is a figure kicking a ball. This is used when camcording action.
Remember to turn the dial to whatever feature of the camcorder you want to try. There is a red dot on the camcorder near the dial for this reason.
**In the center of this dial is another button. This is not turned. All that can be done to this particular circular button is press on it on the word of the feature you want to use. They are:
**Fade. This is used if you want to fade in and out when you pause while filming. I do not personally like this.
**Title. You may use this to put a title in whatever you want to film.
**Frontlight.
**Backlight.
The last item on the left-hand side of the camcorder is located on the bottom front. It is a black, jagged edged button. There are menu and push written near this jagged edged dial. All you do to access the menu is push in gently on the jagged edged dial.
In this area is where you can change the date and time. There are many other things that are changed by using the menu. One thing you can do is set the timer for the camcorder. What this means is you can set up the camcorder, then walk away from it and the camcorder will automatically camcorder every so often, depending what setting you choose.
~~~~~~~
On top of the camcorder is where you will find the buttons for zoom. There is a W and T on either of these two square soft plastic buttons. This brand of RCA is only equipped with 22x zoom.
Also on top of the camcorder are {three} circular buttons. They are very small. These are:
*SP/SLP
*Date/Time.
Counter R/M
*Quick Rec.
They last thing located on the top of the camcorder is a large black circular button. This is where you view your tapes. Worded on the camcorder near this button are the words: Play/Pause and Stop. There are arrows for fast forward and rewind located directly on this circular button.
To use this all you do is press on the button to do whatever you wish. You can rewind and record over the tape if you want. Also you can look at the tape while it is in the camcorder. My grandma does not have a VCR, but she did view my wedding tape while I held the camcorder for her.
~~~~~~~~~
On the right hand side of the camcorder is where the strap is to hold the camcorder. It is also adjustable which comes in handy for a larger handed person.
Near the strap is a red button on an arrow shaped plastic piece. This is turned to point the arrow at whatever you wish to use the camcorder for. There are 3 things printed near this button. They are: VCR, Power Off, Camera.
~~~~~~~~
On the bottom of the camcorder is a screw-type opening for a tripod. I do not have a tripod, but when we got married, the minister had a tripod and I set up my camcorder before the ceremony.
When I purchased my camcorder, the entire package included the battery, battery charger, and an adapter to play your tapes in a VCR. I purchased my carrying case separately. It was $20.
*All I did was charge the battery, snapped the battery onto the camcorder, turned it on, and aimed and recorded*. Then I looked at the paperwork that came with the camcorder and did some reading before using it some more. haha.
**My Likes and Dislikes Overall**
For the amount of time and money for this camcorder, I am pleased with it. It functions well and the battery keeps a good charge. Do not leave the battery attached to the camcorder if you know you will not be using it right away.
I have used this camcorder at least 100 different times since March of 1998. My children graduated from Dare, mom was there to see them get a t-shirt and coffee mug. When my 2 oldest graduated from 6th grade, Mom and Dad were there to watch and record. Nice results for a large auditorium setting with bad lighting. I turned the large dial on the left side and looked through the eyepiece until I saw the results I wanted, then I was ready to record.
When my hubby and I went to Winchester Virginia, the battery was charged and a new tape was in the camcorder. I did not set the camcorder up right, so the picture quality is not the best, but it does look good and the children talking while we got married is also recorded for posterity.
I have also used this for my children's birthday parties and when we went to my nephew's birthday party, Aunt Hun was there with her camcorder to record her favorite nephews' antics on that special day. My hubby and I watched the tape the next day and we're pleased with my steadiness of my arm. {I shake a lot}
I went to visit my great grandfather before he died and I filmed him while I was there. I am glad now, because he passed away and I have only a couple pictures of him and my great grandma. She passed away right before I purchased this, so I was not fortunate to get them on film together.
This camcorder is somewhat easy to use, just read the instructions or experiment like I did. The tapes for this camcorder cost approximately $4.00 each, depending where you buy them. I found VHS tapes at a grocery store that came 2 in a pack for $7, on sale. Make sure to buy the mini VHS tapes. These can be purchased in some larger grocery chain stores or your local WalMart, KMart and Sears.
There are only 2 bad things I have noticed about my camcorder so far. The eye piece does not stay perfectly circular shaped. It is rubbery and is almost oval shaped from being taken in and out of the camcorder carrying case. It still serves it's purpose, so I can't complain.
The other dislike I have for this camcorder is the zoom is not stronger. I wish I had understood that before I bought this, but I am still happy because I have a camcorder at all. A twenty-two power zoom is not strong enough for far away to suit me. This camera is excellent for close up camcording and does work well in light, I will admit.
I would recommend this camcorder to parents or homeowners. On a scale from one to 5, I would give this camcorder a 5 on overall usage and features included in this camcorder.
This camcorder would make an excellent birthday present or Christmas gift.
