Pros: nice combo of features, hi resolution, and large format negatives and slides
Cons: No FIREWIRE support for Windows!
The Bottom Line: Don't buy this if you need Firewire with Windows. Read the manufacturer's website specs carefully! Otherwise, a good value.

| homeallday's Full Review: Canon CanoScan 9900F Flatbed Scanner |
I have not had much time to use this scanner yet. Overall, it is a nice machine for amateur or home-office use with consumer friendly software.
Number one problem: I bought this scanner because it had BOTH Firewire and USB2.0 interfaces. My Sony laptop has Firewire and USB1.1 so naturally, I wanted to use firewire which is faster.
Sadly, Firewire is only supported for Macintosh and NOT windows. Per Canon's customer support, there are no Windows Firewire drivers for this product.
Oddly, Firewire and USB1.1 (not USB2.0)are supported for Macintosh.
So now I am stuck scanning at USB1.1 speed which I could have gotten with any $50 scanner. Unless I go buy a USB2.0 plug in card for $50 for my laptop.
Scans are much faster via USB2.0 on my desktop WinXP. Unfortunately, I do most of my work on my laptop.
Once I figured out the interface issues, I did just a few scans (very slow at USB1.1). Documents came out fine. 4x6 photos fine. large format negatives fine. I have not had a chance to work with 35mm film or slides yet. I have not encountered any software crashes on my laptop's WinME.
Also, I noticed some hazy "finger-like" smudges under the glass. Tech supports states that these are normal from the coating process and will appear uneven. I have not done enough scans to determine if they show up in the scans.
I have to say that tech support was quick to respond to my questions by email, even on Christmas Eve. That is a rarity nowadays.
