| amigofreddy's Full Review: Canon CanoScan 9900F Flatbed Scanner |
I have been using this scanner intensively. This is an excellent piece of hardware and I have been able to get great scans from negatives and slides with excellent colors.
When I bought this scanner my first impression was to be disappointed because the colors that you get with the default settings are unrealistic. Those reviews saying about blue casts and slight red shifts are true. But this is only if you scan with the default settings as it is true for any other scanner. You always have to correct the colors to get a great scan.
Fortunately you get Photoshop Elements along with the scanner. You have to use it to get good scans, don't bother using the color correction screen of ScanGear as it is to basic for the color corrections that you have to make to correct the colors.
Many people have asked how to correct the color that you get from the 9900F scanner, this are a few tips that have worked for me:
1. Calibrate the scanner every time you turn it on. Use the calibration button in ScanGear.
2. Select Unsharp Mask to get a sharper image.
3. It's important to modify the exposure value as autoexposure usually underexposes the image. For negatives put a value less that 100 (75 works for me) and for slides use a value grater than 100 (170 works for me). It depends on the image.
4. Scan the image. Then go to Photoshop and change the following settings:
5. Fine tweak the exposure of the image using the curves tool.
6. Change the contrast of the image as desired.
7. Go to "Color Balance" and put the Cyan-Red Level in -15 to reduce the Red shift of the image.
8. Go to "selective color" tool. Select blue. Then decrease the Magenta percent as needed to get rid of the blue cast of the photo.
9. Decrease the color temperature using "curves" if needed.
Using those tips I have been able to get great scans. Images are sharp, colors beautiful, resolution is excellent.
I've had no problems to scan using thumbnails in slides as another reviewer asserts. It works well for negatives and slides.
I definitively recommend this scanner, it's a great buy.
