tar4heel2's Full Review: Canon Digital Rebel / EOS-300D Digital Camera with...
I bought the DR about two weeks after it was introduced, in mid October, 2003. It's now May 18, 2004 and I have taken approximately 2,500 photos with it. I cannot say enough good about this camera, limitations notwithstanding.
I have used it in rain, 10 degree weather, wind, dust, heat, you name it. I probably need to clean my CMOS chip, but so far I have noticed no degradation in image quality.
It's reliable, controls and buttons work easily and it's just a joy to use.
PROS:
It's lightweight, easy to operate in quick situations, incredible image for the money.
CONS: This should be your LAST choice for a fast-action camera. It just will not fire like an M-1 rifle. More like a bolt-action WWI-era military rifle. S-L-O-W. Lenses are awful! The $100.00 auto-focus lens that comes with the $999 package is a toy. There is a lot of light aberration, and the autofocus cannot be relied on, especially in quick-shooting situations. Manual focus is BAD! The lens does not feel solid, like the "L" series lenses. They move too easily which makes it very difficult to focus manually and keep the setting. The slightest touch will throw it off. Plus, the focus function is very loose, and the image actually shifts when I touch the focus ring resulting from a loose assembly. Most of the time it does a great job once it locks in, (and that's the problem) but at best these images are not gallery quality. If you want gallery quality images, you must use the Canon "L" series lenses. The autofocus will not work in even the slightest dim-light situations, or when placed in a smooth-light (non-contrasting) image.
But, I do a lot of landscape photography and it is wonderful for that application. I have not found the limitations to be a serious impediment to my use as a landscape photographer. But, if you really want the best this camera can generate in terms of image quality, use only the "L" series EF lenses. They are the tan colored lenses for the most part, but all have the red band around the front of the lens.
Actually, I think the images should speak for themselves: http://www.yosemitefun.com/tarheel/images/pictures_of_yosemite.htm 90% of the images on this website were done with the Digital Rebel. These were shot with the cheapo EF lenses.
Good luck!
