| egale's Full Review: Canon EOS-20D Body only Digital Camera |
Having started with a 300D, then upgrading to the 10D and now the 20D, I have been so pleased with each upgrade. The 300D is a great camera. It is missing some features that make it harder to work with sometimes but all in all the results are excellent. The 10D was great after the 300D. The additional features like user selectable exposure and focus modes, made this camera a dream. Although they shared the same sensor, my results were way better with the 10D and my percentage of keepers went way up.
Then along comes the 20D. I debated as to whether the upgrade was worthwhile and finally decided to do it. This camera is as much a step up from the 10D as the 10D is to the 300D. The list of new features like instant on, 5 frames/sec, ettl 2, 9 point autofocus, and 8.2mp don't tell the whole story.
The proof is in the output. The pictures are fantastic. First, autofocus has been right on every time. It is quicker than the 10D plus it seems to be always dead on. No more blurry shots. Second, the colors and saturation are noticeablly better than the 10D. I have found that I need very little if any post processing. Third, the extra MP allow for extra cropping where with 6MP sometimes you couldn't crop as much.
High ISO pictures taken without flash are a lot less noisy than with my 10D. The 10D did a great job, the 20D does even better. Even the internal flash is usuable as it sits up higher to avoid shadows from the lenses and helps with red eye. Of course, an external flash will give you even better performance but it is nice to know you can count on the internal flash in a pinch.
My camera came with the 1.02 firmware which I immediately upgraded to the 1.05 version. The camera ugraded without incident. I have had no problems with lockups at all.
I could go on and on but this camera is really something special. I expect to get a lot of use out of it. If you are looking to go the DSLR route, this is a great camera and if you already have a 300D or 10D, it is a great upgrade.
