| everalm's Full Review: Canon MultiPASS MP730 All-In-One InkJet Printer |
I bought the MP730 after reviewing the comments from epinions and a lot of hands on touch and feel.
(Updated May 06)
Had the printer returned after having it serviced. Canon agent is Compucal in Manhattan, very professional and helpful.
Started to put the machine under pressure with high definition photo prints from my other new baby the Nikon D70 digital SLR. The prints from both the PC as well as directly from compact flash card are exceptional.
Great saturation, hue and contrast, as close to the screen view as you can get for this price of printer.
Nags remain the same as below with a new twist.
The only other printer in serious contention for me was the HP PSC 2510. The Canon won out on print cost and perceived print quality HOWEVER the HP's built in wireless network connctivity is now something I covet. Many home in America now have both broadband AND shared wireless connection. Adding this function, even as an after purchase bolt-on would be well worth the additional cost.
(update ends)
If you need a reasonably sized footprint, multi function, photo quality color printer there are a ever increasing number on the market but if you want
1. Reasonable footprint
2. Multi function
3. Photo-quality
4. Reads and prints directly from media card
5. Individual ink tank
Then in my opinion this is an excellent choice. I specifically bought the unit to print images off my new Nikon D70 digital SLR. Initially this produced high quality photo reproductions with no problems and all was well in the world.
HOWEVER I have had a few problems and the machine is currently back in being serviced
1. Paper does not always feed in cleanly and can ruin the paper edge.
2. The black ink no longer prints, not a cartridge problem as I have already replaced the cartridge with a new Canon unit.
Assuming the servicing fixes the problem I will continue to use and reccomend the machine.
It does however have 2 lacks that HP have addressed and I feel Canon need to address to keep competitive.
1. No LCD preview screen
2. Print previews from media cards are too small and fuzzy to be of anything other than basic usage
Really the machine needs an LCD screen for preview and basic cropping etc as well as to integrate the HP function of decent sized preview, tick the images you want to print then use the scanner to inform the printer.
This demonstrates "joined up writing" thinking and I'm disappointed Canon haven't built this in. It's a multi-function, use the multi function capacity !
