| consumerapril's Full Review: Canon PIXMAâ„¢ iP5000 InkJet Photo Printer |
I purchased this wonderful unit about 2 months ago, after my HP Photosmart P1000 finally took a dump on me. I have always been pro HP when it comes to printers, but there was something about the look of the PIXMA that made me think twice about my purchase decision. Then it hit me, there isn't a card reader on this unit. Most people would disagree that this is an advantage, but I already have a card reader in my case, and adding a duplicate reader is redundant and useless. Instead, they have added a PictBridge connection that allows direct printing from a USB connected camera or camcorder. What a great feature, seeing that I just purchased a Canon Optura XI camcorder a week prior to this happening. Use of this feature is super simple.
Photo printing also excels on the PIXMA iP5000. My HP did a nice job, but this printer gives professional lab-like results. I have printed at least two dozen 5 x 7 photos and countless paper printings that past two months, and the ink levels are only down 1/8 of the total volume. My HP went through ink cartridges like it was ketchup at a french fry convention.
The only area where I think this printer may lose a few points is with printing to plain paper from the internet. It just doesn't have that crisp consistant look or feel that most printers seem to give. This could be contributed to the paper quality being used, but several different types have been tried with similar results.
I won't cover all the other great things about this printer as those who have given their opinions before me have covered them quite well.
Overall this is an excellent printer, one I would purchase again! I got this one at Staples for $179.99 on sale. Boy have prices come down. My HP Photosmart P1000 (I believe this was one of their original photo printers)cost me over $450.00 back in 2000.
Good Bye HP, Thank you Canon.
