| Carazariah's Full Review: Canon PIXMAâ„¢ MP750 All-In-One InkJet Printer |
Intro
Okay so I'm a little slow getting to this review, after all I bought this printer last Summer.
But, after reading the information here and experiencing this printer for the last 6 months, I thought a little more long lasting review was in order. I came to this purchasing decision about a year and half ago as I researched complete computer systems and printers for my parents. Upon reading the information and looking at the alternatives, I discovered 3 things I liked about Canon printers. A. They have lower TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) than their competitors especially in low ink costs. B. They have high quality prints. C. They integrate their printers and camera's well to make a seamless easy printing system.
Purchasing
Since this item is currently not a presently manufactured item, it might be hard to find, if you do find it I wouldn't spend more than $200 on it, I personally bought it for $99 on clearance at Fry's but that type of deal is hard to find. You may look at the MP760 or the MP780 both excellent AIO (All in One) printers with great ratings from many reviewers if you can no longer find the MP750.
Setup
This printer is fairly easy to setup, it has good clean directions and is USB 2.0 compatible, of course you need to buy a USB cable, it's not included. The only problem with setup is this thing is heavy! 30lbs and it's dimensions have it taking up quite a bit of desk space. ( 18.5" x 19.1" x 12.0")
I had to re-set my printer pull out drawer on the Armoire I had just put together to fit this printer in, and then it still needs just a little more room on top to work seamlessly, oh well. Software wise the installation was a snap and Canon includes some great extra's including a great OCR scanning software that really creates some sharp looking documents. (oops a little ahead of myself)
Setup Grade B - I really only have myself to blame for the setup difficulties, I should have realized how big this was before I brought it home, but the design is kind of bulky, if you need more desk space Canon has several smaller AIO models available.
Copying
The copy feature is an familiar and easy to use option on the front of the AIO. The nice part of this machine is it has a sheet feeder so you don't have to stand and feed one sheet at a time to get a several page document done, the sheet feeder makes it simple to copy and leave it. It of course doesn't have heavy office features like auto sort and stapling, but that wouldn't be expected on this level of machine. The copies print at the same quality level as everything else, which is really good.
Copying Grade: B
Scanning
This Optical: 2400 x 4800 dpi scanner does the trick nicely. It scans simply and cleanly into either its on page maker document or any other scan enabled software package you may have. These come out very well and offer the added benefit of the sheet feeder. It was a easy chore to scan in 40 pages for my wife recently, and the AIO didn't miss a beat. The added benefit of the standard Pagemanager software and the enhanced OCR software (ScanSoft® Omnipage® SE8) showed great benefits in the ability to create Word Text Boxes and graphic representations of all the boxed elements not just the text. There is an option to upgrade to a pro edition, but I didn't see the need since the included advanced OCR works so well. This is a separate application from the Page Manager(Presto! PageManager), but it can be added at the bottom along with any other of your favorite editing applications, Word, Paint, Photoshop, The Gimp, etc. . .
Scanning Grade: A
Printing
Well what can I say, Canon says their Pixma technology creates outstanding high quality prints, well I can't really attest to the long standing quality, but as far as initial impression, I can say wow, well done. . . Color: 4800 x 1200 dpi This printer completes excellent speedy prints, that if they aren't hitting the advertised speeds, sure complete quickly. I didn't complete any timing tests, but I have been pleasantly surprised at this AIO's speed and quickness. It has a slight pause momentarily as it prepares to print, but once it starts, it completes very fast, especially for text. I haven't printed many photos but they finished in less than a couple of minutes, which beat my HP 882c by about 4 minutes. Of course that is a 6 year old ink jet printer. :)
This printer has 5 cartridges included 3 color and 2 black, which allow quite a bit of flexibility in changing them out, at just the time you need to rather than when one color runs out as 2 cartridge systems do.
Printing Grade: A
Faxing Evaluation
This model does not have a fax module included, that is on the Model MP780.
Faxing Grade: INCOMPLETE
Overall
This is a great printer, and worth every penny I paid 6 months ago. Ink Cartridges range from about $7 for the 3 color and 1 included black and $12 for the larger black size so I can purchase all the replacements for about $40 retail and often find them for less. The speed, quality of this printer can't be beat. Don't forget the nice extra touches which are becoming more common, but still nice like PictBridge, which allows you to plug in compatible camera directly to the printer and print directly without a computer.
