Nice review. (Reply to this comment)

Hey Howard,
Thanks for wringing out all the wrinkles that this photographic digital machine has to offer. As usual your excellent comprehensive report on equipment. But that is what we all need to make good purchasing decisions.
Keep on putting photographic machines through their paces 'cause we all need such reviews whether we know it or not.

I currently have a G2! (Reply to this comment)

Wow, I've been stumbling from one of your reviews to the next. Don't listen to Brad, I really liked the amount of detail you put into the review. It is evident that you test cameras and understand useful features and the pros and cons. I have been more than pleased with my G2 and 35mm Rebel from Canon. It is nice to know the advantages of the G3 and G5 though incase I want to upgrade.
I don't know if you use a photo editor but I really enjoy Photoshop Elements 2.0! In any case, keep up with the details and great information.

Re: brad's Take (Reply to this comment)

Hi Brad,
1. Lets start with what I believe is your primary concernyou said I'm thinking of upgrading, but I need some bottom line advice. I can help you determine if the G5 will meet your needs, why dont you send me an e-mail. Please include the following information:
a. What sort of pictures do you primarily shoot - travel, portraits, sports, family gatherings, etc.
b. Will someone else be sharing/using this camera, someone with different photographic experience and needs?
c. What do you need from a digital camera that your a Digital Elph S100 does not provide?
d. Are you also considering any other digital cameras
e . Any other information you consider relevant
2. Brad my primary concern with your comment is that you misquoted me and then after misquoting me went on to chastise me for saying something that I didnt actually say!
-------------------------------------------------- brad's Take (includes the misquote)
And by the way, Howard, if you're going to cite a bunch of "facts" here, also cite the source. Again, no offense, but you're not a professional photographer as far as I know, so I want the source of your facts (especially for stuff like "Canon thought about skipping the 5 mp race entirely").
I highly, highly doubt that is or ever was the case. I would like to know where you got that information
--------------------------------------------------
Brad, if youre going to quote someone, you should be very careful to provide an exact and in context quotation
Heres what I actually said:
All Canons professional dSLRs (D30, D60, EOS 1D. and EOS 1Ds) utilize advanced CMOS imagers and many industry insiders speculated that Canon would skip the five megapixel race entirely and drop the CMOS imager from the EOS 10D into the G3s successor.
There is a considerable difference between what I said and what you quoted me as having said.
3. I have no problem with discussing the source of my information
As for the source of my information --- I have an old friend whos in the business. He deals with many of the major manufacturers and attends a couple of trade shows every year. He shares much of the insider gossip he picks up with me. In addition, I am relying on 30 years photographic experience, copious reading, testing cameras, my experiences as a photographic equipment consultant and my personal impressions.
It is always nice to hear from another member who has an interest in photography.

brad's Take (Reply to this comment)
by brad
Here's the problem I have with this review:
it's too long.
The casual site browser will easily get overwhelmed by this review and probably leave it after about two paragraphs. It is overly detail oriented.
No offense, Howard, but this is a consumer review website, not a place where professionals gather for input. Pros will listen to their industry niche, paid consultants.
What I try to do in my reviews, when I get technical, is make a summary of points that the average Joe Schmo should take away. I try to make clear the points that are deal makers or deal breakers.
This is an enormous amount of information and quite obviously far too much to digest for even an intermediate photography hobbyist like myself. I've been using digital cameras for over two years and currently have a Digital Elph S100. It's holding up nicely. I'm thinking of upgrading, but I need some bottom line advice.
I would like to know where you got that information.
I still gave you a VH, mostly because I trust you and you did put a great deal of effort into this review. And it is very helpful.

Most Helpful, as always.... (Reply to this comment)

Howard,
I know folks who need the latest and greatest and who will probably spring for the extra dough.
You make a great point about CF size card. I think too many people start out too small and then regret they didn't have a bigger card. I tell folks that if they can afford it, they shoulg go for 1GB mini-drives. SOme actually take my advice.
Another masterful effort. Please keep these coming, Howard. I like being able to refer my friends to your reviews. Many of them come back to me and thank me for the referral because they find your postings so "all-inclusive."
When it comes to these reviews, Howard, you're the man.
Cheers,
Paul

hi howard, i've been relying heavily on your awesome & super informative reviews in my ongoing dig camera shopping. While the G5 is quite tempting i think the G3 fits my grad student budget a bit better. Now just have to decide if i will wait for prices to drop a bit more. hmmmm....... (any thoughts on the time frame?)
anyway, THANKS!!!!!

Howard,
I always learn so much from your super-informative reviews. I may be in the market soon for a new digital camera...I'll have to go back and re-read some of your reviews before making a decision. As with all your reviews...this one was excellent. Thanks!

Hi Howard (Reply to this comment)

excelelnt review as always..This quote really caught me attention since I've been thinking of doing the same thing..."and I think he has pretty much decided to ebay his G2 and buy a G5." well, I wasn't actually thinking of the G2 or G5 but selling my Nikon coolpix885 and maybe even my APS Canon ...How much do you think I could expect for the 885? It's been pretty decent to me especially since it is my first digital but there are some features I'm not too thrilled with...
Thanks once again,
Barbara

Always a pleasure reading your reviews (Reply to this comment)
by mab1492
Not only are your reviews well-written and from a well-informed perspective, but I love the little bit of culture/history you always add in.
I just bought the G3 and LOVE it. I still can't believe the lens is visible through the viewfinder - did they correct that with the G5? Redeye is a problem with the G3 as well, but easily fixed in post editing. Glad the lens cap is strapped to the camera or I'd lose it for sure.
Anyway, it was after reading most of your digicam reviews that I decided on the G3 and I am so glad I did. Thank you for writing such great reviews, this one being no exception!

Always getting to play with the coolest and newest digital camera then you write these superb reviews. I'm still waiting for my CoolPix 5400 to ship to me.... sigh.
Excellent review Howard... you pointed out some problems I wasn't expecting on the G5.
