Almost flawless! Super-fast picture taking.

Pros: Super fast! Compact, but with ergonomic controls. Great interface.

Cons: No cradle; no battery life indicator; cheap battery cover.

The Bottom Line: If you want a compact camera for taking pictures REALLY fast, it's hard to find a better choice. Excellent controls and great picture quality too.

We switched from Canon's very old S30 primarily because it has been unable to allow us to take good pictures of our kids. Kids have a tendency to move a lot and S30 was too slow to focus and to release shutter. The S30 was also very bulky. So I've done a lot of research and testing of new smaller digital cameras to find the one that would:

1. Have a very fast shutter release time.
2. Save pictures very fast.
3. Recharge flash in the shortest time possible.
4. Be compact.

The SD300 fits the bill perfectly unlike some other cameras I tried and returned before it (like Casio Exilim with its 10 second flash recharge time). We've had it for about 6 months now and I can't tell you how happy both me and my wife are with this camera. The speed with which we can now take pictures of our kids to capture those precious moments is astounding compared to the old camera we had and even to the film camera we used before.

POSITIVES:

* Fast focusing and shutter release
* Fast writing of pictures to media
* Unmatched speed of flash recharging! I compared to all other available compact cameras and nothing is as fast.
* Flawless controls and menu system. Several easy-to-find buttons for commonly used tasks, such as switching flash mode and for browsing/erasing pictures.
* Sexy metal body!
* Compact size. We bought Canon leather case for this camera and like it a lot.
* Great battery life. I did buy a spare battery, but I'm yet to need it.
* Excellent picture quality. Very easy to print to a DirectPrint compatible printer. Even my mother can figure it out!

NEGATIVES:

* Does not have a multi-level battery life indicator. It only gives you warning when the battery is low. Thankfully the battery life is great so we've never been caught with an empty battery yet.
* Does not come with charging/sync cradle. I found having such a feature to be wonderful with Casio.
* Have to take the battery out to recharge it. At least you don't have to do it often...
* Battery compartment cover is plastic and I'm afraid it's going to break off.
