Cons: Does not support banner paper, doesn't have separate color ink tanks like i550
The Bottom Line: Don't let the low price fool you: this printer has the speed, quality, and borderless photo printing capabilities that you've been looking for!
potatoaddict's Full Review: Canon i450 InkJet Printer
After spending about 30 minutes in Best Buy in the printer aisle, I decided to go to Staples and spent some time there. After about 15 minutes of searching there, my decision went with the Canon i450. I previously owned a Canon BJC-2110 and was pleased with it's good work for the past few years, but I decided it was time for an upgrade.
Several key features caught my eye on the i450. It has a fast printing speed of up to 18 pages per minute (PPM) in black, and 12 PPM in color. It's borderless photo capability for 4" x 6", 5" X 7", and 8" X 10" prints was a plus. Furthermore, it's extreme resolution of up to 600 X 6000 dpi black and a whopping 4800 X 1200 dpi in color was jaw-dropping. I printed a test page in the store by pushing a button and was impressed with its excellent printing quality and speed (and that wasn't even the best print setting).
After seeing all of this, I was thinking that this must be a really expensive printer; HOWEVER, I was so wrong! Only $99.98. Yowsers I nearly fainted. Upon recovery, I picked up a box and purchased the printer. Okay, so I didn't really faint... but at least you got the impression.
I went home and installed it with a breeze. It's step-by-step installation foldout poster makes installation fool-proof. I noticed that after power-up, the printer takes a while to get ready first (if you leave your printer on all of the time, then you won't be bothered by this). After installation of ink cartridges, drivers, programs, and the mandatory nozzle allignment, I was ready to do some serious print testing!
First, I started off printing a regular black text document with text that covered the whole entire page. After hitting the print command in Microsoft Word, it took the i450 a few seconds to initialize... then all of a sudden, it sucked in a piece of paper in a flash and started printing and finished within a matter of a few seconds. With the draft setting, it printed as fast as a laser printer while giving up only a little quality for the increased speed.
I decided to try one of the free 4" X 6" glossy photo paper samples (you get 5) and print a picture I took with my 3.2 MP Sony digital camera. It finished printing it around one minute. I was astonished! I was thinking "shut up, no way, na uh, really, what the... etc." It looked and felt like a real photograph that you would get when you develop regular 35mm film at the lab. Seriously, give a print that you've made from the i450 to someone else and they couldn't even notice that you printed the image at your own home. It's like having your own photo lab! Now I can stop driving miles and waiting hours to Walmart or Costco just to have my digital images printed.
Overall, if you're looking for a new printer and you're low on cash, then this is your lucky day because you get a printer that has it all: quality, speed, and a great price! (again I bought this at Staples for $99.98)
