| topher34's Full Review: Canon imageRUNNER® 600 Laser Printer |
I recently returned from a week long technical training class on the Image Runner 600/550 in Atlanta. This is without question the most technologically advanced black and white copier that Canon has ever produced. Some of the things this machine can do are amazing! I am extremely impressed with this copier, and I have been servicing Canon copiers for fifteen years.
Overview
This is a high volume digital copier/printer. The maximum recommended monthly volume is 250,000 copies/prints, with an optimum performance range of 30,000 to 120,000 copies/prints. It has a resolution of 600x600 dpi. It is quiet and dependable and has a wide variety of optional finishing capabilities, such as cover insertion, multi-position stapling, 3-hole punching, Z-folding, etc. This product also meets the Energy Star guidelines for energy efficiency.
Features
The ImageRunner 600 runs 60 copies per minute and the 550 runs 55. Total paper source is standard at 4,150, and with an optional side paper deck, increases to 7,650. The 600 features SmartScan which utilizes optical character recognition. This means that if you accidentally have several pages in a stack of originals that are upside down, the image processor automatically turns them around! Also, if you feed your original in lengthwise, but the copy paper is loaded widthwise, it will automatically rotate the image 90 degrees so the copy comes out correctly!
It also features a single pass duplexing system. There is no "holding tray" for two sided copies, so duplexed copies are delivered continuously and smoothly at the rated speed. A dual copier memory mode is standard. This is a great feature. Because of the fact that all the originals are scanned into memory, you can program a second job and load the originals while the first job is still printing. This allows an uninterrupted flow of sheets and can greatly improve office productivity.
Another really neat feature is called Forms Composition. This allows you to scan into memory up to 100 of your most commonly copied forms, and name them. The next time you need copies of one of these, you simply select the one you want and print out as many as you need. No original necessary!
Network Printing
The ImageRunner 600/550 comes standard with a 2.1GB hard drive, capable of electronic sorting. With an optional Network Multi-PDL Printer Board you can fully utilize the printing capabilities of this machine. Netspot offers a consistent user interface across all computing platforms, and simplifies the process for configuration and device management. A wide variety of protocols are Ethernet supported, such as TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, Ethernet Peer to Peer, and AppleTalk. The interface ports are auto sensing bi-directional Centronics. Up to 45 true fonts are available and speed is up to 100MB/sec.
A really neat printing feature is Confidential User Mailboxes. Confidential print jobs can be placed in a mailbox, and then printed out later. Up to 100 user mailboxes can be designated.
A Real Workhorse
The volume capabilities of this machine are amazing. I have seen one account with four ImageRunners run 100,000 to 300,000 copies/month on each machine for the past year and a half. They now have about 2.5 million copies on each machine and recently purchased a fifth ImageRunner!
