| dhacker's Full Review: Britax Roundabout Convertible Car Seat - Puma |
Car seats are strange things, you want your child to be comfortable and safe, and you'd like to feel secure in the knowledge that you're doing everything you can do to make that possible. We looked at lots of car seats that felt unstable, looked cheap or (and this happens with lots of kids gear) were just downright ugly. My son so disliked his former infant car seat that we took to calling it "The Scream Bucket". The Britax Roundabout was a pleasant, although pricey change from those days.
Installation of the car seat (as with most brands) was certainly not "a breeze". We have a Subaru Outback Wagon and the back seat has a slight downward tilt. I had to put a 2 x 4 underneath the seat to adjust the level (our infant car seat had an hand cranked wheel to do this for us). Britax recommends installing the seat with the tether option but this proved to be a difficult task. I called Subaru and was able to order a tether attachment that hooked to the back ceiling by the hatch. This arrangement proved less that stable as it tilted my newly leveled seat forward too much. Subaru provides no place to attach the tether on the floor of the vehicle so eventually I settled on wrapping the tether around the headrest of the front two passenger seats. This arrangement, though awkward looking, provided for a rock solid setup. I don't blame Britax for this, I blame the US auto industry for not setting standards around installation that would help the car seat manufacturers.
Britax has included lots of little details that set it apart from other seats. Velcro tabs to keep the straps out of the way, fabric guards to keep hot metal away from the babies skin and a plain denim cover for those of us sensitive to teddy bear patterns! The seat itself is made of the same crash-resistant foam that bicycle helmets use.
With the Britax Roundabout you get what you pay for. The Britax is on the very high end of car seat cost, but after using it for about two months, I'm happy we spent the money. The Roundabout feels rock solid, my son seems happen when seated, I feel safe and the plain demin color suits my sense of style.
