| cspu's Full Review: Bazooka RS8A Car Subwoofer |
I have an 89 regular cab Chevy truck. It comes stock with 4 4X6" speakers that are to put it nicely... WEAK! See my review on Polk 4X6 speakers. Even with the upgraded polks, the truck still had "all highs". A 4X6 just can't reproduce low frequencies! I bought the Bazooka because of my space constraints, and because I am too lazy to build a custom enclosure. I didn't want to modify the truck either. Call me crazy, but I like having my tire changing equipment handy.
Specifications:
8" subwoofer in a bass reflex(ported), moisture resistant enclosure. Designed for corner loading (aiming into the corner of the trunk or cab).
150 Watts rms(average power)
18db electronic crossover (blocks high frequencies from the sub).
Dimensions: 18.325 x 8.5 x 10
2 year warranty.
Installation:
I was able to install the RS8A in my truck in about an hour. Run the supplied power cable from the battery, through the firewall, and connected it to the amp on the back of the sub. Connect the ground(I used one of the bolts that holds the seat in). Connect the signal input: The Bazooka gives you the option of running RCA cables or tapping into your existing speaker wires for input(great for stock systems). The sub is held in place using two small plastic platforms and 1" nylon straps. Two holes must be drilled for each platform to secure it to the vehicle, the straps thread through the platforms and around the sub, where they are held tight by buckles. (These tend to work loose, re-tighten every month or so)
After you have the sub physically installed, you have to "tune" it to your other speakers and your listening taste. Starting with the crossover frequency, 80hz (about 1/3) is a good place to start, adjust it until it sounds right to you. Then adjust the gain by turning up your stereo until just before it starts to distort and adjusting the gain until it mixes well with your other speakers. You don't have to listen to it all the way up, this process just makes sure the sub doesn't drown out your other speakers. Now you can fine tune the crossover and you are in business!
How does it sound?
Absolutely wonderful! I have nice low bass guitars and drums at any level. The sub fills in the low frequencies I was missing beautifully. Since the original adjusting procedure, I have not had to "tweak" the sound at all. It offers a good balance of tight, punchy bass and loud boomy bass. The Bazooka sounds great with any type of music.
Warranty and Customer Service
The company that makes the Bazooka subs is SAS, based in Louisiana. The amp blew in my sub a few hours after I got it setup. I contacted SAS and told them my problem. They were very helpful, they gave me instructions for returning the sub and had it back to me with a new amp within 2 weeks. (My brother had no problems with his sub). They stand behind their products and want their customers to be happy. Their website is very helpful, you can download the manual for your sub and even ask technical questions.
Summary
The Bazooka packs a punch in a small package. These are not the subs you will hear coming a mile away, but they sound great to the people inside the car. The are pretty expensive, but can be had for the price of a regular sub/amp combo if you shop online. With the ease of installation, great sound, and excellent customer service, I would recommend a Bazooka to anyone!
