Pros: small size, easy loading, works with factory controls (no FM modulation).
Cons: No MP3 data discs allowed.
The Bottom Line: For a CD audio player I highly recommend it, but if you want to be able to play MP3 data discs then go for the next model up.

| yngwie1's Full Review: Alpine CHM-S630 6-Disc CD Changer |
Boy was I happy to find this unit sitting in the back panel of the 2000 BMW 528 wagon that I just bought. It was a clean installation and with an adapter worked flawlessly with the factory BMW head unit and steering wheel controls. Since there isn't much I like on the radio these days CD's are a must-have. This player seems to be built well and should last a long time given the location of the install (behind a panel).
Contrary to what another reviewer said on this site, playing CD-R's and CD-R/W does not mean it will play MP3's. The manual clearly states this. You need the next model up to play MP3's (CHA-S634). I must admit I was disappointed to learn this since the car I just bought had this unit in it. Oh well, it is a fine CD audio player, but don't expect more from it.
Since it lacks the MP3 player and the vast amount of music that can be taken on relatively few CDs it disappoints in that it only allows six discs in the cartridge. A six disc set up is fine if you want to throw in a complete Wagner opera, but if you are like me and enjoy jumping around through songs as the mood changes then go for the MP3 model.
In summary, Alpine does not disappoint in its quality...ever. I have used Alpine products since 1994 and they have earned a reputation for quality. I consider them to be a company that continues to deliver as promised.
