I just had a new 5 series loaner from BMW for the day while my 01 530i was in for service. The loaner had the same options mine has, premium package and automatic. Although the exterior styling is awesome, the interior leads much to be desired. In general, it is cheaper looking. Overall impression is cost cutting was done everywhere. The wood trim was decreased so much that you hardly notice any. The headliner was changed from a soft felt one to a vinyl mesh canvas which was very truck looking. I-drive is a pain. What where they thinking? Seats are less padded, wider and flatter. They don't give you that wrap around sporty feeling the older version did. There are less speakers although the sound system was still nice. Cup holders, although improved, are still an afterthought. Seatbelt height adjustment was gone. My seatbelt anchor was by my ear. Definitely not safe. Headrests are hard and flat, unlike my current soft marshmallows I love to sink into at the end of a tough day. There was no place to rest my arms due to the restyling of the door handles and center console. Overall, I'm keeping my old 5 for as long as I can.
