I have nightmares... (Reply to this comment)
by highlander2000
of the Sonata's front grille, which makes me think of happy monsters, happy because of the evil they're propagating into this world!!!111 LOL or something. Only the Santa Fe's front end scares me similarly.
Anyway, Hyundai seems quite the up-and-coming car brand. With Kia in their fold now, they're the #7 automaker and are quickly gaining ground on the higher competition. Reliability and component engineering have improved IMMENSELY thanks to new management, so what's left now at Hyundai is sharp designing and smart marketing.
As for a certain car company named Mitsubishi, only God may know what the future holds. Haha, I was reading another article on Hyundai's potential surge in the auto market in the next 10 years, and I found myself hoping Mitsubishi would catch a ride on the Hyundai train. Who knows, could be interesting with a fresh and energized Hyundai featuring Mitsubishi exclusively as a sporty vehicle brand; and also Mitsubishi could share quite a bit of technology/expertise with Hyundai.
Anyway, Hyundai-Kia is going to be a mover and shaker in the auto industry! Looking forward to the new Sonata and higher-end 265 hp Azera. A 265 hp Hyundai?!? They must be pushing the displacement up to ludicrous levels... like 3.5L, or God save us all, 3.8L!

Hi Gael! According to some magazines the 0-60 time will be down over a full second when equipped with the 3.3 liter V6, so around 7.2 seconds). Still about half a second slower than the V6 Accord, but I'm not complaining. If you check out that link that Hyundaifan provided carspyshots.net and click on new cars you can view the new Sonata. Looks a bit plain, but that interior is the best I have seen from Hyundai.

Hi Ethan, thanks for the compliment. It probably would be your best bet waiting for the '06 models or waiting for when those '05 models start getting those massive 5000 dollar cash back rebates.

Hey Scott! I'm sorry I just don't see the Excel influence in the 2006 Sonata's grille. I do however see an Elantra type front fascia along with a Honda Accord styled rear. That interior looks very nice. Thanks for the link!

We have a 2003 Hyundai Sonata and have been very happy with it. Hope the 2006 models are better.
Well done!

Great review! (Reply to this comment)

My wife and I were looking at one of these earlier this evening. Hmmm. Perhaps we will wait for the 2006 models. I'm used to a hyperactive four-cylinder linked to a five-speed, but I could get used to an automatic.
Great looking cars, however. Hyundai seems to be making some fantastic cars these days.

Hey :) (Reply to this comment)

I really recommend going to carspyshots.net and click on the "New Cars 2005/2006" section. Somewhere in there you should find engine specifications and pictures of the 2006 Sonata (which is much better looking than the current car) and the 2006 XG (or "TG" as they call it)
Is it just me, or does Hyundai's new "design scheme" on the 2006 models look strikingly similar to the front of my Excel? That grille; the headlights. Koreans going retro? LOL
Great review :)

You are right! I had no idea the 2.7 liter was ever equipped with a manual (at least in the Sonata) Thanks for the info and thanks for the compliment.

What a waste (Reply to this comment)

Definitely one of your best written reviews. So it saddens me that the 2006 will arrive shortly, limiting the impact of this review. I didn't bother entering the Sonata into the database at TrueDelta for this reason. I did enter the Optima, though, as I believe the redesign for that one arrives this fall at the earlist.
A manual transmission used to be available with the V6. They dropped this option just a year or two ago. So if that's the combination someone really wants, there are some out there on the used market. I can't say a manual makes much sense in such a softly sprung sedan, though.

Your reviews are always well done, of course, but this the cleanest-looking of your reviews. Very nice job on this -- it should really help people researching the Sonata.
