I have had my 2005 Jeep Liberty for about 5 months and overall it is a great mini-suv. I have the V6 with auto trans rated at 5K towing. I got a car dolly and towed a rabbit home without any problems, but outside my quad trailer I really wouldn't have bought this for towing a toybox or travel trailer. I have been averaging 17mpg city, and 21mpg highway (keep it under 70). Seats uncomfortable for over 200 mile trips, jeep REALLY needs to fix this. They seem to think it is a Rengade or CJ-5, but its not, its a City car. Doors tend not to be aligned or close right all the time with a normal effort.I am running MObil1 synthetic and Purolator Pure One oil filter. I am looking into changing the Chrysler 11" rear end gears from 3.73 to 3.24, which should add 3-6mpg. Like I said I don't tow much and I don't race so mpg is more important. I have heard the 4cyl is not much better, in CA they do not offer the CRD diesel which averages 30mpg.
Outside of seats and mpg (still above a Ford Escape and Chevy Blazer) I give it an A-.
Here I am 16 months after purchase and want to update my notes on the Jeep Liberty. I am changing my opinion to "DO NOT BUY". I was looking at trading in and was offered $11K by a Honda Dealer, and $9000 by the Jeep/Dodge dealer where I bought it, trading in for a New Dodge Caliber.
The resale, trade-in is horrible. The seat problem with the 02-06 Liberty is pathetic. Constant stains, now the seat thread is bleeding into the seat material making dark stains.
I am getting a constant 19-20 mpg at 32,000 miles.
There are recalls on front end parts causing serious accidents and engine fires, however I find these reports scarce.
I should have looked at a Saturn Vue, or a Nissan Xterra.
