Mitsubishi makes some good cars, and they have been in the business for many years. Although they had recent financial troubles, they are starting to turn the corner. They have many cars from small to large, as well as SUV's. Their entry level small car is the Lancer, which comes in ES, Ralliart, OZ-Rally, and Evolution models. I have experience with the ES, and it is their basic model. The other ones are more for people interested in a lot of bells and whistles, and racing capabilities.
The ES comes with these options: Air Conditioning, AM/FM CD player, rear defroster, cloth seats, power steering, power windows, power mirrors, and airbags in the front. Brakes are front disc/rear drum, and the car is front wheel drive. The tire size is 185/65/14, and replacements in this size usually run $45-55. The Lancer comes with a standard 3 year/36,000 mile warranty, and has a 2.0 liter 4 cylinder single overhead camshaft engine. Power is rated at 120 horsepower, and overall mileage is rated at 28 miles per gallon in the city, and 35 mpg on the highway. Fuel capacity is 13.2 gallons, and the overall vehicle weight is 2,655 lbs.
I feel this car is a decent smaller car, but its nothing special. It really does not make you daydream or have a overall enjoyable driving experience. It is practical transportation, and does have some good points. However, it is not as exciting as some of its competitors, such as the Nissan Sentra, Honda Civic, or Toyota Corolla. The acceleration is lackluster. You cannot make the tires spin even with the pedal hitting the floor, and it doesn't move fast at any speed. The engine is too loud for a car that does not have any acceleration power-it is even noisy at idle speeds. The brakes seem to have average stopping power, and react in a confident fashion when you apply pressure. Overall visibility is excellent, there are no blind spots on line of sight issues. The windows are shaped well, and the interior of the car is pretty good. There are no real plastic cheap parts to the interior, and the dash is wood.(Looks real nice, and adds a expensive touch!) The gauges are easy to read, although the interior light is weak. However, the gauges are easy to read as the dashlights illuminate well. (Also, its very easy on the eyes for long trips.)
Steering is easy, and without effort you can switch lanes. It is a bit loose compared to other vehicles in this size class, so be careful not to overcompensate. All of the gadgets such as the radio are simple to use, although the quality of sound is not good. In fact, it is one of the worst in newer cars, and should be replaced. There is no bass, and when you crank it the speakers really struggle. Other than the stereo, quality control is very good. The power windows work easily, and are very quiet when in operation. The ride quality is very smooth, and quiet as well.
Seating is pretty good for a small car. You do not want to put five people in this car, even though Mitsubishi claims the Lancer can handle this. It is very uncomfortable, but a family of four can get in without major problems. The seats have excellent support, and the front seats are teriffic. They are very comfortable, and easy to adjust. The back seats have excellent support as well, and there is pretty good leg room for a smaller car. The seatbelts are properly positioned, and connect with a snap. The trunk is average in space.
Overall I would recommend this car for someone looking for a decent price. It is a attractive car, and is of good quality. If you like great gas mileage this car will not disappoint, but the engine power is weak. The Lancer seems to be a good car for the money, and it does have a generous amount of features. Be sure to do some price shopping, and look for rebates, since Mitsubishi offers them on a frequent basis.
