Bought a used Prius for the price of a new one

by cocopop: Written: Jun 10 '06

Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Roomy interior, gas mileage, easy to drive
Cons: MPG not as high as claimed
The Bottom Line: I would still recommend the Prius, just don't get all excited thinking you will only have to fill up once or twice a month.

Hubby and I decided to trade in the 19 MPG minivan and get something that was better on gas. At first we were going to get a New Toyota Yaris, but after extensive research we decided on a Prius instead. We bought a 2005 with 16,000 miles on it for the price of a new one. BUT the price was Still $2,000 LESS the the used 2005 in the next city over (I don't live in a huge city, and they had 2 used ones on the lot) Honestly I wasn't patient enough to wait to order a new one, which are hard to come by in CA. (but keep in mind the new ones have a $3150 tax CREDIT from the IRS)

So we've been driving it 2 weeks and are finding we are filling up more than we anticipated. I exepected twice a month but it looks to be more like every 8-9 days. It has an 11 gallon tank and I was told by the dealer I could go 650 miles on one tank . NO WAY am I even going to get close to that. More like 450-500. I am averaging about 45 MPG overall. I am also learning the little tricks to keeping my MPG up , such as letting off the gas once you reach your desired speed, and generally if you are under 40 MPH than it will switch to electric only if there is enough charge.

The interior is very very roomy, I am really surprised. Hubby is 6'3" and 250 pounds and he can drive this car more comfortably than his 99 Camry! More head room and leg room. The hatchback trunk has a ton of room, you'd be amazed at what I have fit back there. The 60/40 split fold down back seats are extremely helpful. I have 2 kids in booster seats and they fit great but it is a tight fit to put someone between them. I think it would be a little better once they outgrow the boosters. On a similar note I can actually fit 2 Britax car seats in the back (with no more for a 3rd person) but that says a lot about how roomy it is for such a tiny car.

I really enjoy the tv-like screen where you control the air/heat, radio and can observe your MPG rate and battery power. I have no problems using it while driving, not sure why other people are having issues?

The radio is kind of crummy, haven't used the cd player yet, but it's a sound/speaker thing, what can you expect from basic you know?

Handling is awesome, even Hubby who is super picky loves driving it. He says it zips along and he has no problem passing people on the highway.
