| bobhob's Full Review: Casio DL 250LA Basic Calculator |
The Casio DL-250L sitting on my desk has been in the same spot for over seven years. I have replaced the 10-key machines on my part-time employees desks twice in that time.
The machine has large keys, with a conveniently large, well placed total/grand total button, and an even larger add key. The layout is very intuitive, with all of the common function keys to the right (add, subtract, total, etc) and the less used ones to the left (#,item, percent).
There is a K function, allowing you to multiply a large amount of numbers against a constant, like gross wages against FICA tax. That is super handy, as I can total 20 employees FICA, then MED, with a minimal number of keystrokes.
There is also a digit erase key. If your fingers move faster than your brain, you can back the digit or two (not your fingers) back off without clearing and starting over.
It does all the things that a standard 10-key should, from floating decimals to rounding to numbering the entries. The most important part of this machine is its speed and durability. I have used this 10-key daily for seven years, and I replace the ink roller every 18 months or so. It uses a standard 2 1/2" roll.
The two color ribbon is a bonus. Try using a single color ribbon, and switch to red for negatives, and you'll never go back. It seems such a small feature, but you come to depend on it quickly. Even the subtract key is red, but you want your business to use the red ink as little as possible ;).
The ink roller impact style is much faster than a laser type printer, and it will always keep up with me, and I do about 150 keys a minute on 10-key.
The bottom line on this comes to what it always does - you get what you pay for. You can buy this and have it last forever, as I did, or you can buy the cheaper $30-$40 models and replace them every two or three years. Much cheaper in the long run.
