sallyg8's Full Review: Char-Broil 18 1/2" Charcoal Grill
This is a great little portable, not too expensive grill, . It packs up easy, ready to take anywhere. not to heavy, and either looks cute to you,or strange, or down right ugly. I think it looks cute, but since "beauty is in the eyes of the be-holder" you judge that one for your self. One thing for sure it is an eye catcher For the most part it is in a class of it's own, well not exactly, now there are some updated or newer models, one even comes with it's own cooler; and by the way I am considering getting that one too.
Putting it together was work
I had only seen this grill twice, both times it was already set up and assembled correctly. After checking it out very carefully, lifting the grill plate, lifting the grill screwing and unscrewing the legs so I could fold and unfold it, I knew I wanted this grill.
I thought I was going to be able to "Grab it and go", but it came in a big box and had to be assembled. I thought this would be a piece of cake and we would be able to use it the same day.
Boy! who was I kidding, It seemed to have a million parts. not really true, and over all we were able to get it put together without any hitches, taking a few coffee breaks here and there.
Mind you I am use to assembling things, but we did not use the grill the same day, and I suggest if you can get it already assembled do so, My guess it that it took two of us about two hours, but I did not actually check the clock. At any rate knowing what I know now I would have gladly have given the $10 bucks or so it would have cost to get it already put together, but at the time I didn't even think to ask.
Why buy another grill
What can I say, we have three cars, and a travel trailer, 10 kids, and we travel a lot, camp a lot and go on many picnics. The older I get the more spoiled I get, I don't like transferring items from one car to the other, or from home to the camper. If you have ever had to do this with a car seat, you know what I mean, so now when ever possible I want each vehicle, and each home to have it's own. More often than not we are either taking a grill with us, or needing an extra one.
To me it looks much nicer than the small $10, $20, even $50 portable grills, it is also a conservation piece, and people stop to notice it and ask questions.
Just like the little Volkswagen Beetle, or the newer Chrysler PT Cruiser this is not a Bentley or a Mercedes, and if you are expecting more you are going to be disappointed Now on the other hand if you take it for what it is, it is a wonderful spur- of- the- moment, camping, travel, grill for the occasional user, grill for apartment dwellers and grill for fun, but Not The Real Thing
Remember this is gas, not charcoal. This is a fun, easy to pack up and take, set up and use, clean up and go home, not to expensive somewhat durable, versatile, portable grill.
Why I bought this grill?
I have several grills, sometimes I buy a new one to upgrade from and older one, other times I have bought a real cheap grill just in-case it might have to be left behind, or I needed one on the spot I bought this Grill because of it's versatility, ( you can use a large propane tank on it, or a small compact tank, mine came with a small screw on conversion device so you can switch from one tank to the other. Takes about 2 minutes to change attachments. ) There are a few little trick to learning how to fold the legs up, or let them out, popping it in and out of the base, but nothing difficult. It even comes with it's own set of cooking tools, and a grease collection container that screws right on. I also bought it because it was cute. Yes I think it looks adorable. it was bigger than my other portables, but smaller and more compact than a full size grill. I felt it was worth the extra space it took up, see details below
It is great for camping, but it does not substitute for a campfire, or the kind of grill that helps to enhance flavor. If you are and avid camper or planning to be eventually you are going to be wanting a stationary grill too. However if you take quick trips, stop at roadside parks or rest areas, run to the beach, live in and apartment this could be just the little baby for you. We take the Char-Broil Thermos Grill2Go with us all the time, and it is not so bad switching it from car to car. It has 4 fat hand size screw knobs that you turn to release or fold up the legs. When you are ready to set it up you just let the legs out, and tighten up the four knobs so they will stay standing up. If you don't want to use it standing, and want to sit it on a picnic table you can, just keep the knobs tight so the don't fall off and get lost. I have seen people with cars that the back opens down sit them on this door when it is open. I would not suggest this because I believe it is too close to the gas tank of the car
How does it cook? Well I would like to say as well as the cook, but not always so. You have to keep in mind this is a grill, much like the one you might use in your kitchen, this is propane not charcoal, It will leave the grill marks on your best steak, but if you don't do the seasons right, and you think you are going to get a charcoal or mesquite taste you are buying the little sweetheart for the wrong reason. It cooks great, but not really like outdoor cooking but more like indoor cooking outdoors
