My trusted and beloved bartender noticed that my regular "dry Beefeater martini straight up with a twist" was making me grimace when I took that first slug. He suggested I try the Citadelle. About 10 minutes later I was proclaiming to the whole bar that this man knows his liquor and should be trusted above all. The difference was shocking. Before making the switch, my premium martini was made with Sapphire...which is good, but not as good as Citadelle. Apparently it is ultra-filtered or something - I really don't care how they do it, I just know they do it right. The Citadelle goes down smoothly without losing that flavor that is quintessentially GIN. It's not nearly as harsh as any other gin I have ever tried (and trust me, I have tried a lot). Drink it very dry for the full effect.
I will say this, however. It is a premium liquor, and therefore bears the appropriate price tag. Don't bother mixing this high quality stuff with something as common as tonic...it will wash out and you might as well be drinking Gilbeys.
Next time you're at your favorite watering hole for your martini lunch, ask the bartender for a "dry citadelle up with a twist." You will brace yourself for that liquory, ginny taste, but will be surprised and pleased with what you find.
